Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Senior Sister/ Charge Nurse/Senior Operation department practitioner. to join our clinical team within our operating theatre complex at the Royal London Hospital.

We currently have 26 state-of-the art elective and emergency theatres, covering a variety of specialties and complex procedures: Hepatobiliary, complex ENT, trauma & orthopaedics, reconstructive orthopaedics, neurosurgery, complex vascular surgery, intervention radiology, maxilla facial surgery, robotic procedures, renal transplants, plastic reconstructive surgery, neonatal surgery, shared airway ENT, ophthalmic surgery, along with providing paediatric expertise to the major trauma service in South East of England

We also provide regular cover other specialities within the hospital, including our specialist dental treatment rooms, endoscopy unit, radio-interventional suite, MRI/CT Scanner suites and our specialised staff work along the Trauma Team in Emergency Department’s Resuscitation area. This offers an opportunity to work with renowned Specialist Trauma Surgeons and Anaesthetists.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is predominantly concerned with ensuring the delivery of high standards of patient centred care ensuring the cost-effective use of resources. It combines clinical expertise, Theatre utilisation, leadership, and educational/research skills with managerial and professional responsibilities.

The post holder will have overall accountability for the day-to-day management of the registered practitioners and support workers in their team. The post holder will practice at an advanced level demonstrating a high level of autonomy and clinical decision-making. They will work as a highly specialised member of the inter-professional team to ensure that the needs of the patient are met at all times and that staffing is at an appropriate level to meet patient needs.

Essential criteria
  • Educated to degree level or relevant clinical experience Registered Nurse/Operating Department Practitioner
  • Mentorship in Practice course or equivalent
  • Leadership/Management Course
Desirable criteria
  • Educated at degree level or working towards

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Current clinical experience as senior Anaesthetic practitioner
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Experience at Band 6 or above as a senior anaesthetic practitioner/sister /charge nurse
  • Management experience including management of rotas, resources, budgets and staff
  • Experience in staff / practice development including undertaking appraisals and Personal development plans
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of managing a budget

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Up to date knowledge of current clinical skills and professional issues
  • Awareness of government led and professional issues relating to nursing / patient care
  • Demonstrate an awareness of clinical governance and risk management and how this effects their role and the department
