An exciting opportunity has arisen for a passionate, motivated band 6 Midwife who has sound infant feeding knowledge to work within our infant feeding team based at the Princess Anne Hospital for one day a week. You will be providing specialist infant feeding care, whilst supporting with the day-to-day running of the Infant Feeding Team and twice weekly tongue-tie clinic for our Maternity Service. You should have the ability to perform Frenulotomies or the enthusiasm to undertake training.

You will be providing specialist infant feeding care to new parents with complex feeding challenges, alongside overseeing and supporting other members of the Infant Feeding Team. This will include the allocation of referrals received and ensuring they are managed appropriately. You will be providing clinical leadership, overseeing the running of feeding support clinics, liaising with other lead professionals, and being involved in staff education. You will be pivotal in supporting the implementation of UNICEF Baby Friendly Standards which will include demonstrating best practice and explore practice where this is not being upheld. This will involve liaising with the multi-disciplinary team, including the postnatal ward and transitional care unit, to ensure family centred care and support.

The Infant Feeding Team work 7 days a week to give specialist support and advice to staff and new parents on their feeding journey. The Team is based on the postnatal ward at the Princess Anne Hospital. Help and support is provided at the bedside, in booked appointments, in person, via videocall and by telephone. Our Maternity Unit is a fast-paced service with five thousand births per year and a breastfeeding initiation rate of 81%. We are currently working towards achieving the Baby Friendly Initiative accreditation.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

•    In this role you will work in the Infant Feeding team alongside our Infant Feeding Specialist Midwife to help support with the day-to-day running of the infant feeding service.
•    You will provide direct feeding support on the ward areas for families and staff, including supporting other colleagues in the Infant Feeding Team.
•    You will be involved in the referrals made for complex support and suspected tongue tie, responding to these appropriately.
•    You will be closely involved with the ongoing work of implementing the Baby Friendly Standards, which will include education for families and staff.
•    You will gain experience in service audit identifying key areas of focus to improve the service.
•    You will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with the senior leadership team to assist in the development of guidelines related to infant feeding.
•    You will be able to work inter-professionally with voluntary and statutory groups across Southampton City and New Forest to protect and promote breastfeeding in Southampton.
•    You will need to have a driving licence or have the ability to travel between the Princess Anne Hospital and the New Forest Birth Centre.

The candidate will be expected to demonstrate:

The role is for 7.5 hours per week, in one shift, working flexibly to cover service needs between Monday-Friday.
