Are you passionate about Critical Care Nursing and looking for a new  challenge?

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse to join our friendly and supportive Critical Care Team. We are looking for a nurse who is able to demonstrate substantive recent and relevant experience at Band 5 level in a Critical Care environment and is able to evidence a mentorship qualification and a 60 credit Intensive Care Course.

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual who is an  excellent communicator and has a genuine interest in developing their critical care skills. Interpersonal skills are essential and   they will be demonstrating the ability to be forward thinking and passionate about delivering high standards of care.

Our critical care service has 12 beds, managed between two units, and we care for an average of 800 patients each year. Bedfordshire Hospitals (L&D Site) is the tertiary centre for Maxillofacial (Max Fax) Surgery & Bariatrics.

 BUT, it is an exciting time to be joining our Critical Care team as we are in the process of building a brand new Intensive Care Unit as part of a £168.8m capital scheme. The new ITU will be able to accommodate 22 patients in a modern spacious environment with up to date technology supporting the nursing team to deliver excellent care – we will be moving in spring of 2025,so come and join us!

To support and work with the Ward Manager and Matron to provide effective unit management. To take regular charge of the clinical area in the absence of the ward manager.

To take responsibility for the assessments of the care needs; the development, implementation and evaluation of care to ensure the highest possible standards of care are received by patients.

To supervise and teach other nursing and non-nursing staff, acting as an excellent clinical role model and team leader to ensure quality care is delivered to the patients.

Our Critical Care department consists of  a 12 bed capacity.  We deliver high quality, patient focused care for patients who require level 1, 2 and level 3 care. We have a dedicated outreach service including NIV support out of hours.

 We are a member of the East of England Critical Care Network and participate in ICNARC (Intensive Care National Audit & Research Centre) so we can help to contribute to improving outcomes in critical care. We are participating in the training of Advanced Critical Care Practitioners and we currently have two nurses in training who support the medical team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

To provide skilled nursing care and demonstrate a high standard of practice in assessing, implementing and evaluating patient care, including analysis and interpretation to facilitate decision making skills.

Act as a Team Leader, support and supervise the further development of nurses and nursing practice in critical care.

To ensure that care is delivered as per Trust and critical care policies, is aware of changes as they occur and partakes in the addressing of changes.

 To participate in the “Clinical Competencies,” including assessment of staff as applicable after appropriate training.

To ensure that custody, administration and recording of drugs are in accordance with Trust Policy and NMC guidelines.

To inform the Critical Care Matron of any matters affecting the professional standard of patient care.

To adhere to the guidelines within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.

To be responsible for the accurate documentation of clinical data and all data related to the daily management of the Critical Care

NURSING ORGANISATION:

  1. To supervise the professional work of nursing staff (Band 6 and below).
  2. To support other team members in their professional work, to be able to adapt and deal with swiftly changing circumstances.
  3. To be aware of current issues and policies within the Trust and critical care and ensure these are maintained

        4. To assist the Critical Care Matron with the cost-effective use of resources in patient care delivery.

  1. To ensure staffing levels are adequate and organise cover if required appropriately and cost effectively.
  2. To ensure clear and concise documentation of all patients property and valuables according to hospital policy

Qualifications

  • NMC register
  • Must have completed at least 60 credit Critical Care Course or equivalent
  • Must have an MSPP certificate or its equivalent

  • Must have exposure to supervised co-ordinating or taking charge of the unit, able to act up in the absence of a band 6 or senior staff

Experience

  • Relevant experience in Critical Care
  • Excellent communication written and verbal skills.
  • • Demonstrates awareness of current changes in the NHS – in particular related to Nursing

  • Basic IT skills to be able to admit, discharge and manage patient details on Extramed, EPMA, IPM, ICE, Nervecentre

Skills

  • Must be able to assist in invasive procedures such as intubation, CVC & arterial line cannulation
  • Demonstrate Competence in all aspects of medicine management such IV medications, PCA etc.

  • ALS trained or willingness to get trained
  • Demonstrate Competence in Venepuncture and Cannulation
  • Demonstrates the ability to undertake challenging conversations
