Birmingham Women’s & Children’s NHS FT hosts six Specialised Women’s & Children’s Networks for the West Midlands region;

  • Perinatal, Paediatric Critical Care, Surgery in Children, Congenital Heart Disease, Children & Young People and Teenage & Young Adult Cancer & Paediatric Palliative Care
  • We are inviting enthusiastic, motivated and innovative individuals to put themselves forward for the opportunity to become Deputy Lead Nurse for Paediatric Critical Care (PCC) & Surgery in Children (SiC) Networks.  – the postholder will focus on developing our PCC & SiC networking. They will form part of a wider team crossing all six networks which is developing new ways of working to best support both our members and patients and families in the West Midlands. They will work closely with our Clinical Leads, Lead Nurse and Network Manager, and stakeholders. The Deputy Lead Nurse  will have focus and responsibility on the SiC network, including delivery of pre anaesthetic education. They will need to be an influencer; additionally, we are aiming to build a collective to advocate for the needs of West Midlands. An understanding of and passion for networks and across organisational boundaries is essential. This is a full time post, with flexible working. The postholder will need to be able to travel across the West Midlands. The post holder will work closely with the Lead Nurse , Clinical Leads and Network Managers to facilitate and support the transformation of services across the region. With support & guidance from the networks team, they will identify, lead (where appropriate) and oversee other specific projects related to the WM Surgery in Children (SIC) & Paediatric Critical Care (PCC) Networks. 

  • Act as a clinical nurse specialist across both Children’s Surgery and Paediatric Critical Care; focus/leading in their base clinical specialty
  • Deputise for the Lead Nurse when required
  • Develop in collaboration with the network’s education team networks’ education programmes.
  • Coordinate and deliver regional Pre-Anaesthetic Assessment course for the Surgery in Children Network.
  • Provide expertise and advice when planning and developing relevant pathways of care.
  • Support the Lead Nurse in identifying potential nursing workforce issues that will help to inform the planning and development of new models of care and education.
  • Demonstrate the ability to professionally challenge/ escalate concerns identified.
  • Demonstrate the ability to critically analyse situations and approach dilemmas with a solutions based approach.
  • Promote an environment that fosters the development of safety and efficiency. 
  • Be enabled to work clinically to support maintenance of professional registration
  • Attend and represent the West Midlands PCC & SIC Networks at relevant meetings – and report back to colleagues where required.

  • NMC Child registration to practice or other if paired with significant paediatric experience
  • Degree in Nursing of equivalent
  • Evidence of relevant continued professional development
  • APLS or EPLS Qualification
  • Sound knowledge and experience in managing the care of paediatric surgical patients with relevant EBP
  • Sound knowledge and experience in managing the care of a critically ill child requiring stabilisation or escalation of care & LTV (with relevant EBP)
  • Evidence / experience in nurse education / teaching / workforce development
  • Significant experience in supporting colleagues
  • Understanding of Local and National policy drivers
  • Experience of engaging or managing others to enable achievement of project/development aims and objectives
  • Evidence of knowledge regarding clinical audit
  • Able to apply judgement to complex sets of facts or situations, which require analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options and enable making recommendations to Trusts across the region
  • Proactive, self-motivated with the ability to motivate others
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate autonomous/decision making
  • Ability to manage own workload
  • Competence with Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Articulate in a professional and confident manor
