Consultant In General and Colorectal Surgery

Consultant In General and Colorectal Surgery (including Cancer)

Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust is a friendly, integrated healthcare provider focused on improving the life chances and health outcomes of our diverse population.

We have three strategic objectives:

People: To cultivate and sustain happy, productive and engaged staff;

Patients: To be good or outstanding at everything we do;

Population: To work seamlessly with partners to improve lives;

We run services from Sandwell, City and Rowley Regis Hospitals, Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre, Birmingham Treatment Centre, the Lyng and Leasowes Intermediate Care Centre. Our GP practices and community teams provide care in schools, healthcare centres and at home.

Our next milestone is opening the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), a once in a career opportunity to shape care transformation within and beyond the hospital walls.

Developing and caring for our People is fundamental. We were one of the first Trusts to provide the Real Living Wage, as well as a Live and Work scheme to support people at risk of homelessness into paid work and training. We offer a range of staff benefits, health & wellbeing support and will help you to bring your ambition to life through our bespoke training and development programmes. As “People” is one of our three strategic objectives, we make a continued commitment to prioritise support for all our colleagues.

Healthcare services have a significant impact on the environment. We are committed to embedding sustainable practices. We expect all colleagues to support the delivery of our Green Strategic Plan and to drive positive changes in their department.

Job overview

We are seeking to recruit enthusiastic, innovative, and progressive Consultant to join our Substantive General and Colorectal Surgery Consultant team. These are replacement posts.

It is anticipated that the high caliber appointees will be fully immersed in all aspects of Elective and Emergency General and Colorectal surgery including cancer.

Within Cancer surgery we boast amongst the best outcomes in the region and nationally despite the numerous challenges within local population.

We have recently acquired a dual console Davinci XI which is further cementing SWBH at the forefront of colorectal surgery.

In addition to cancer surgery, we also have an award winning tertiary pelvic floor service (FINCH), an excellent IBD service with a fully functioning MDT and joint clinics, an nationally accredited Endometriosis service and are key members of the regional Gyanecological oncology center.

Candidates with all sub-specialty interests are encouraged to apply and these will be supported.

Closing date: 31st May 2024

Interview date: 1st July 2024

Main duties of the job

The working week for a full-time consultant is comprised of 10 programmed activities (PAs) each of which has a nominal timetable value of 4 hours. Programmed activities that take place outside the hours of 7am and 7pm Monday and Friday or at weekends or on public holidays will have a timetable value of three hours rather than four.

For this post direct clinical care (work relating directly to the prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of illness) includes emergency work (including whilst on-call), outpatient activities, multi-disciplinary meetings about direct patient care, and administration directly related to the above. Supporting professional activities (that underpin direct clinical care), include participation in training, medical education, continuous professional development, formal teaching, audit, clinical management, and local clinical governance activities.

The on-call commitment for this post is currently - 1 in 7 day cover (4 and 3 split) and 1 in 14 night cover. The on call availability supplement is currently Category A and currently classed as medium Frequency with an on call availability supplement of 5 % currently payable.

Working for our organisation

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBT) is an integrated care organisation with a budget of approximately £600 million and over 7,000 staff. Diversity and social care is at the core of what we do as the Trust provides Community and Acute Services to over half a million people in an urban centre that demands massive regeneration and has substantial premature mortality.

Our new acute hospital, the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), opens in 2024 and will provide care to our local population from first class, purpose-built premises. As a result, the base of this role may change to MMUH from 2024 (or beyond). If this is applicable to your role, you will be informed during the recruitment process and continuing your application with this understanding. The development of the new hospital will play an important role in the regeneration of the wider area and in improving the lives of local people and reducing health inequalities.

We have three newly emerging strategic objectives:

  1. Our People – to cultivate and sustain happy, productive and engaged staff
  2. Our Patients – to be good or outstanding in everything we do

        3. Our Population – to work seamlessly with our partners to improve lives

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Information about the Specialty: Please see detailed job description attached.  This is a Royal college approved post.

Research: The University of Birmingham would like to support research by offering two protected research PAs to recently appointed (within 18 months) consultants. Sessions will be prioritised for those with a commitment to research and an interest in an area of research that maps to University of Birmingham strengths. Support will be assessed on a competitive basis.

At the University, we know diversity fosters creativity and innovation. We are committed to equality of opportunity, to being fair and inclusive, and to being a place where all belong. We therefore particularly encourage applications from candidates who are likely to be underrepresented in our workforce. These include people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, disabled people, LGBTQI+ people, and women.

A bespoke mentoring/training programme along with a £5k training/consumables budget will be provided. Assuming good progress is made the Research PAs will be for 3 years. In keeping with our track-record of supporting the development of colleagues, we anticipate that the appointees will be able to raise research funding to support their research time beyond the 3-year period.
