Job overview

If so we are looking for enthusiastic individuals to join our NHS family at Sandwell and west Birmingham NHS Trust across our specialist surgical services department. This includes our acute trauma and orthopaedic ward Newton 3 and our elective orthopaedic ward Lyndon 3.  

Main duties of the job

As a health care support worker/ health care assistant you will be supporting patients with their personal, tailored individual needs including washing, dressing and toileting, taking patient meal orders ensuring to order what is right for them, being able to identify different dietary needs such a soft diet, puree diet, vegetarians, halal etc..  serving meals and helping to feed patient who can no longer do this for themselves, helping patients to mobilise and to move around, making beds, monitoring patient conditions by carrying out observations, be able to use computers to input patient information onto our electronic record systems.

You must have excellent communication skills and be able to communicate any concerns that you may have or if you feel as though a patient is deteriorating or doesn't seem right, you must be able to communicate with patients, doctors, therapists and patient families. you must be friendly and approachable and willing to learn.

Experience

Desirable criteria
  • Previous Trauma and Orthopaedic experience
  • Previous Surgical experience
  • Previous experience in a hospital health care environment

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Care Certificate or willing to work towards achieving qualification
  • Key skills – literacy and numeric (or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ Level II In Direct Care/Post Natal Care/Diagnostics and Therapeutics
  • Basic First Aid Certificate
  • Food Handling Certificate
