Main duties of the job

Assess, plan, deliver and evaluate prescribed treatment and care for patients and their families.

· Communicate effectively and maintain confidentiality with patient’s carers and the multi-disciplinary team.

· Act as a professional role model setting standards of practice.

· Promote clinical effectiveness and opportunities for teaching junior colleagues and students.

· Promote and maintain a safe environment for patients.

· Administer medicines in accordance with Trust policy.

· Develop clinical skills and participate in continuous professional development.

· Provide accurate timely contemporary records of care and treatment in line with Trust record keeping policy and NMC.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

🚑 Supporting out Region: In addition to our PICU we proudly extend our reach through our retrieval service named WATCh (Wales and West Acute Transport for Children) for children in need of receiving timely and expert care across the region.

🎓 Who should attend: Whilst critical care experience is preferred we welcome registered adult and children’s nurses with an interest in learning more about working within PICU. Your passion, caring nature and dedication to excellence is what truly matters to us.

ℹ️ About our Unit: We are the PICU for the south west region of England with 18 beds. We provide a tertiary service for all paediatric sub specialities: trauma, burns, neurosurgery, general surgery, cardiology/cardiac surgery, renal transplant, respiratory, ENT, metabolic medicine, neurology. The unit also provides supra regional critical care support to the children with congenital heart disease in south Wales

  • Broad knowledge and experience of clinical nursing practice within a hospital environment

  • Demonstrate competence in clinical skills relevant to the clinical area
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, able to communicate effectively with patients, carers and MDT

  • Competence in calculations for safe administration of medicines/fluids
  • Ability to take the lead, initiate and ensure appropriate action in response to the deteriorating patient

Public Sector Language Competency

  • Be able to speak fluent English to an appropriate standard

Qualifications and and Training

  • RSCN/ RN child branch (NMC registered) or equivalent
  • Current NMC registration
Desirable criteria
  • Work towards relevant university accredited post basic study programmes e.g. teaching and assessing course
