Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon

Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust is proud to offer this exciting opportunity to work in one of the most beautiful parts of the country in an expanding general surgery department and colorectal unit.

This is a new position to join the existing four colorectal surgeons in this busy unit.  The Colorectal Surgery Unit at BHT is a high-volume cancer and IBD surgical unit and has an excellent track record with some of the highest volume surgeons in England on NBOCA.

The aim of this appointment is primarily to improve delivery of elective colorectal cancer services to a very high standard and within timelines set down by NHS England, and to create capacity to allow provision of other benign colorectal services.

Main duties of the job

Purpose of the post

The purpose of this post is multifaceted:  to expand, develop and provide simple and complex colorectal surgical services, and diagnostic colorectal endoscopic services with the rest of the GI and Gastroenterology teams; and to help develop and provide an acute inpatient and ambulatory care pathway as part of a cohesive specialist emergency team, and deliver emergency general surgery services as part of the whole department.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Outpatient clinics at Wycombe General and Amersham Hospital
  • To be part of the on-call rota
  • Operating lists
  • Endoscopy lists
  • Clinical and other administration as required by agreement
  • Teaching and training of junior staff and undergraduates
  • Participation in Clinical Governance
  • Ward round to link emergency inpatients with cancer and complex colorectal needs, with the colorectal specialist unit and arrange further care

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Specialist training in Colorectal and General Surgery to specialist level or equivalent
  • Experience and training in the surgical management of common, non-specialised emergency conditions in children
  • Logbook evidence of experience in General Emergency Surgery, Colorectal Emergency Surgery and Minimally Invasive and Open Colorectal Surgery and Lower GI Endoscopy
  • Logbook evidence of experience in Specialist Coloproctology
  • Ability to make independent decisions at colorectal specialist consultant level

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for General Surgery and Colorectal Surgery via - CCT or CESR (CP) (proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview) - CESR or - European Community Rights (actual appointment only possible with full specialist register registration)
  • An appropriate higher surgical qualification in General Surgery (FRCS or Equivalent)
  • JAG accreditation in colonoscopy desirable but not essential at time of interview
  • JAG accreditation in OGD desirable but not essential
  • Evidence of independent competency in minimally invasive colorectal surgical techniques
  • Robotic surgery desirable but not essential
  • Other subspecialist interests / Research interests desirable but not essential
