CARING FOR PEOPLE - KEEPING PEOPLE WELL

Job overview

The Dermatology Directorate at the University Hospital of Wales is one of the professorial Dermatology Units in the UK. It is the focal point of treatment, teaching and research in Dermatology in the Principality.

It has an unparalleled service in dermatological surgery and is one of the centres in the UK which provide Mohs' micrographic surgery for the treatment of skin cancer. Each year some 4,000 day case surgical operations are performed in the Department (many patients requiring more than one operation). Skills in Cutaneous surgery are taught locally to general practitioners and higher surgical trainees in various disciplines. The department provides a comprehensive service for the outpatient and inpatient management of all dermatological conditions, including contact and industrial dermatitis, photobiology, molecular, biologics, dermatopathology and laser treatments.

Main duties of the job

The duties of the Fellow in cutaneous surgery include shared responsibility with the consultant dermatologists for the surgical management of patients in the department and supervision of Specialist Registrars in dermatology. Routine outpatient clinics are held in the University Hospital of Wales and at University Hospital Llandough, Penarth. Visits on request may be made to other hospitals in the teaching group. The timetable is flexible and may alter to accommodate the post holder’s needs and demands for training in specific areas. The postholder will be responsible for cutaneous surgery patients admitted to the main hospital building.

On completion of this programme it is anticipated that the trainee will have skills appropriate to a dermatologist with a special interest in cutaneous surgery, including Mohs micrographic surgery, surgical reconstruction for skin cancer and dermatological use of lasers. The post complies with the British Society for Dermatological Surgery curriculum and the requirements of the British Association of Dermatology Post- CCT Fellowship in Advanced Dermatology Surgery and Mohs Micrographic Surgery
