Job overview

A permanent, part-time vacancy has arisen for a Healthcare Science Assistant in the Pathology Specimen Reception at Furness General Hospital, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust.

You will be joining a busy team providing an essential Blood Sciences and Microbiology service for patients in the North Lancashire and South Cumbria area.

This is a part-time vacancy working 23.5 hours per week (Tuesday 12:00-20:00 (30 min unpaid break), Wednesday 12:00 -20:00 (30 min unpaid break), Friday  09:00-13:00, Sunday 09:00-15:00 week 1 and Sunday 12:00-15:00 week 2 this Sunday pattern runs alternate weeks.

Main duties of the job

This is an interesting and challenging position and offers the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to patient care. Your primary role will be in the specimen reception expediting the processing of specimens that require analysis within a short time frame. You must be reliable and able to work under pressure to extremely high standards.

You will also be required to welcome and offer advice to patients arriving in the department to have blood collected in the Phlebotomy clinic.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 3 GCSEs or equivalent including English
  • Good General Education
Desirable criteria
  • A Levels or equivalent
  • NVQ 2 in clinical laboratory support
  • ECDL

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Commitment to undertake relevant departmental training programme/s

  • Previous Pathology reception experience
