Job overview

We are looking for a motivated and dynamic band 6 team leader to join our busy department.

You will work alongside the Senior Team Leader in delivering high standards of care to both Trauma and Elective Orthopaedic patients in a friendly and dynamic environment, providing leadership to all department staff and assist the outpatient Senior Team Leader with the management of available resources for the provision of care to patients and visitors to the Department.

Part of your role will ne to co-ordinate the department in the absence of the Senior Nurse, providing specialist clinical advice regarding the service and treatment of patients and their families, which is based on the latest available evidence of best practice. Working as a skilled member of the multi-disciplinary team and act as team leader.

Main duties of the job

  • To supervise and be responsible for allocating the work of all under his or her control ensuring that all policies and procedures of TSDFT are adhered to in maintaining agreed standards of care.
  • To assist with the assessment and value of new practice and initiatives and implement them where appropriate, monitoring and evaluating their effectiveness
  • To be aware of personal responsibilities as an accountable practitioner for professional development and continuing post basic education. Managed, not directly supervised, assists with the management of the department ensuring daytime cover
  • To assist with the development, implementation and evaluation of policies/procedures/protocols, as needed as part of service developments. To work with other groups to write policies, procedures and patient information leaflets
  • To champion the process for constantly improving patient experience e.g.

Pathway to Excellence

  • To ensure the clinical area has adequate establishment and skill mix

(In conjunction with the senior nurse) and that duty rotas meet the needs of the clinical area

To have access to Clinical supervision as per South Devon Healthcare 

Working for our organisation

We are a busy Orthopaedic department seeing both Fracture and Elective patients.

with approximately 35,000 patients per annum 

This post involves being part of a multi-disciplinary team working with consultants, senior medical staff and with other RGN’s, Orthopaedic Practitioners, Assistant Practitioners, Healthcare assistants, students, and receptionist. 

The department deals with many different Trauma and Orthopaedic conditions, including complex casting and wound care. 

The Department prides itself on providing an excellent service to patients and actively encourages staff progression/training.

  • Knowledge of the existing service

  • Knowledge of specialist / complex casting & splinting

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse with minimum 2 years post registration experience in Trauma & Orthopaedics (be prepared to undertake British Casting Certificate within 18months)
  • or: Orthopaedic Practitioner with BOA Casting Certificate
  • Evidence of continual professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership and Management course

  • Previous band 6 experience
