Job overview

We are looking for a motivated health care professional to join our expanding team of Advanced Clinical Practitioners in Acute Medicine at the Royal Bolton Hospital. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work alongside a well-established and highly skilled team of seven Advanced Clinical Practitioners and two trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioners who provide a seven day service to the Same Day Emergency Care Unit and rotate across all areas of Acute Medicine. This is a busy and dynamic team who excel in delivering high quality patient-centred care. 

This is a fulltime post (37.5hrs/week) with a salary at 8a. Please note that non-medical prescribing is a requirement for this post.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will ideally have experience of working within an adult acute or urgent care division, and possess knowledge and a range of skills that cover all aspects of Acute Medicine. They will need to show a willingness and aptitude to learn and develop. They will need to be self-motivated with a desire to improve patient care through application of advanced clinical skills and knowledge, as well as leadership, education and research skills. The Advanced Clinical Practitioner will be supported with clinical supervision from an allocated medical consultant mentor and Lead ACP in Acute Medicine, and have access to continuing professional development that reflects all four domains of advanced practice.

The Acute Adult Care Division is one of four Clinical Divisions in the Trust that includes Emergency Care, Complex Medicine and Specialist Medicine. The Division contains the busiest single site Emergency Department in Greater Manchester and has inpatient wards providing acute medicine, complex and specialist medicine services.  It provides a range of specialist out-patient and community services and is committed to providing excellent clinical performance and patient care. 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • The Advanced Clinical Practitioner will assess, diagnose, treat and make the decision to admit or discharge adult patients, safely ensuring appropriate advice, health education and referral to appropriate services or other members of the MDT under minimal supervision from the Acute Medicine consultant medical team.
  • Be able to manage their own caseload in response to unpredictable patterns of work.
  • Act as a clinical expert in patient care, able to make high level clinical decisions, informed by advanced diagnostic, assessment and treatment skills.
  • Facilitates ‘expert’ inter-professional care for the ill patient and their dependants by direction, supervision and example; and maintenance of all records.
  • Able to provide advanced clinical skills and knowledge to medical and nursing staff within the acute medicine and urgent care division.
  • Initiates, undertakes and evaluate research and audit.
  • Develops and deliver educational programmes for staff locally and will work with Advanced Clinical Practitioners locally/nationally to develop advanced nursing practice.
  • Ordering and interpreting radiological imaging is an integral part of the role.
  • This a designated non–medical prescribing position.
  • It is anticipated that 80% of the time will be spent in the clinical area with 20% non-clinical time relating to the other three pillars of advanced practice.

Attainments

Essential criteria
  • Relevant Masters degree in Advanced Practice or recognised qualification by the supported portfolio route from HEE centre for Advancing Practice
  • V300 Non-medical prescribing
  • Advanced Life Support qualification
  • Registered nurse with valid NMC registration or Health Care Professional and registered with HCPC
  • Recognised teaching and assessing qualification and or relevant experience
Desirable criteria
  • Centre for Advancing Practice Digital Badge
  • Completion of the NHSE ACP in Acute Medicine credentials
  • Recognised Leadership qualification, and or relevant expereience

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience as a qualified ACP in Acute Medicine, Frailty and or general medicine
  • Evidence of clinical/ managerial leadership experience
  • Experience of change management or service improvement activity
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of training, supervising and assessing competence of junior colleagues

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to analyse information to formalise appropriate diagnosis and management plan
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of advance clinical skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of National and Trust agendas for Advanced Practice
  • Able to generate and present reports
