An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Safety Intervention (SI) formerly Management of Actual and Potential Aggression (MAPA) team for a full time role as lead trainer.

We are seeking to recruit a suitably qualified, enthusiastic and innovative Safety Intervention lead trainer at Agenda for Change band 7. Train the trainer training will be provided to successful candidates that are not already SI trained.

This is a fantastic opportunity to lead on continuous development and improvement of SI training to assist clinical staff in providing high quality care to service users in a less restrictive manner. 

 

Main duties of the job

  • To support the Director of Nursing and Matron for SI Training in the development and implementation of a Trust SI training strategy in line with national guidance and standards- including Health and Safety Legislation, Restraint Reduction Network and Use of Force Act 2018
  • To lead and support the Bedford team in providing high standards of training, that is delivered safely and effectively.
  • To work in close liaison with the London lead trainer in responding to emerging needs of the service.
  • To work with other teams and disciplines across the Trust when required, including the Learning and Development team
  • To ensure an adequate programme of SI courses are provided to meet the requirements as identified in the Trust compliance reports, Trusts Risk Management and Training Needs Analysis
  • To take a liaison role with clinical areas and provide support when required
  •  To ensure an up to date Database of staff SI attendance is kept

The ELFT SI team is a vibrant team covering London, Luton and Bedford areas in providing a variety of none restrictive and restrictive courses to staff working in different client group services. The team's aim is to provide quality participatory training that responds to clinical area issues.

The London and Bedford teams work closely together. Our mission is to make a positive difference to service users by providing staff training that is focused on least restrictive and trauma responsive approaches

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To support the Director of Nursing and Matron for Restrictive Practice & SI Training in the development and implementation of a Trust training strategy on SI in line with national policies and standards.
  • To lead and co-ordinate the identification and analysis of staff training needs within specific areas of responsibility and contribute to the Trusts staff education and training strategy.
  • Work with the Matron for Restrictive Practice & SI Training in the development and implementation of a Trust training strategy on SI in line with national guidelines and standards.
  • To take a strategic and operational role in the provision of statutory Safety Intervention (SI) training to Trust staff that is appropriate to their level of risk.
  • To ensure that an adequate programme of SI courses are provided to meet the requirements as identified in the Trust Compliance reports, Trusts Risk Management and Training Needs Analysis
  • To take a liaison role with clinical areas, other education and training providers, universities, public and private organisations.
  • To ensure an up to date Database of staff attendance on Trust SI statutory courses.
  • To assist in developing and maintaining policies surrounding the Safety Intervention (SI) including the use of physical restraint.
  • Co-ordinate the activities and monitor the performance of the in-house SI trainers to ensure high standards of training, and to ensure it is delivered safely and effectively.
  • Provide regular reports on staff training levels within the Trust and provide feedback to the various work areas as appropriate.
  • Work with others to develop a comprehensive support framework to staff following incidents, including debriefing and critical incident analysis.
  • Ensure that core training objectives materials are evaluated
  • Provide management and clinical supervision, support and guidance to the other trainers
  • Attend meetings, compile reports and provide verbal and or written feedback as required on issues within areas of responsibility.
  • To be involved in continual professional development in order that courses and techniques reflect best practice and meet Trust and legal obligations in respect of the provision of suitable and sufficient information, instruction and training.
  • To ensure SI courses are conducted safely and effectively in line with Health & Safety legislation, RRN standards and the use of force Act 2018

Person specification

Education/ Qualification/ Training

Essential criteria
  • Hold a current mental health or learning disability nursing registration with NMC.
Desirable criteria
  • Safety Intervention Instructor
  • First Aid at Work certificate
  • Relevant teaching qualification (e.g. Mentorship, PTLLS, DTLLS, PGCE).

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical practice experience working in mental health and/or learning disability services
  • Experience at leading/management level

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Computer literate with experience of MS Office and PowerPoint
  • Ability to communicate widely in a clear manner
  • Demonstrable ability to problem solve and resolve conflicts
  • Approachable, tactful and diplomatic
  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritise work, meeting agreed deadlines
  • A knowledge of current national best practice guidelines in relation to SI training; e.g. NICE, DoH, BILD ACT, RRN standards and Use of Force Act 2018
  • Good time management skills
  • The ability to occasionally work independently when delivering training
  • A knowledge of Mental Health and Learning Disability disorders, which may result in aggressive behaviour
