Barts Health is one of the largest NHS trusts in the country, and one of Britain’s leading healthcare providers.

The Barts Health group of NHS hospitals is entering an exciting new era on our improvement journey to becoming an outstanding organisation with a world-class clinical reputation. Having lifted ourselves out of special measures, we now have the impetus and breathing space to chart a fresh course in which we are continually striving to improve all our services for patients.

Our vision is to be a high-performing group of NHS hospitals, renowned for excellence and innovation, and providing safe and compassionate care to our patients in east London and beyond. That means being a provider of excellent patient safety, known for delivering consistently high standards of harm-free care and always caring for patients in the right place at the right time. It also means being an outstanding place to work, in which our WeCare values and behaviours are visible to all and guide us in how we work together.

Barts Health supports the Pregnancy Loss Pledge and commits to supporting their staff through the distress of miscarriage.

The Anaesthetic department offers a wide range of services: elective and emergency operating in

obstetrics, high risk antenatal anaesthetic clinic, trauma and orthopaedics, general surgery, colorectal surgery, gynaecology, maxillo-facial and dental surgery, ENT surgery, urology and ophthalmology, as well as expertise in acute and chronic pain management, and regional anaesthesia. In regard to orthopaedics - there is a significant upper and lower limb orthopaedic trauma workload, and Whipps Cross is now the Fragility Fracture centre for Barts Health. We also provide preoperative assessment and perioperative care sessions, CPET, high dependency and intensive care for adults.

The hospital has fifteen operating theatres, including two laminar flow orthopaedic theatres, specialist

Ophthalmic and ENT theatres, and two theatres in the maternity unit.

Critical Care  provision is delivered across two critical care units – ICU 1, a 9 bedded unit which was completely refurbished in December 2022; and ICU 2, an 8 bedded unit that was opened in January 2017 following a £2.3 million refurbishment. There are around 800-900 critical care admissions across the two units per year.

Critical Care is delivered by 10 consultants The service is consultant-led, supervising junior staff from a variety of backgrounds. We currently support trainees undertaking all ICM modules within the Anaesthesia training programme, ACCS trainees, trainees in the standalone ICM training programme, and Internal Medicine trainees. The unit is recognised by the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine for Stage 1 and 2 training.

The obstetric unit has approximately 5,500 deliveries per year. The maternity unit has recently been refurbished and expanded. There are now two new spacious obstetric theatres, and a new three bedded recovery room next to an HDU room. There are 12 labour rooms available for use in addition to a further HDU room. The elective Caesarean section list runs separately to the emergency theatre activity. There is also a weekly high risk antenatal clinic staffed by the anaesthetic department.

Whipps Cross has a long history of provision of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. London Hyperbaric Medicine

Ltd. was established in its current form in April 2001 as a Private Finance Initiative with the Trust. The

facility is one of the busiest in the UK and has a state-of-the-art multi-place chamber.

There are monthly clinical governance, senior staff meetings and morbidity and mortality meetings. We

have an active teaching program for trainees and allied health professionals which Consultants
