Senior Practitioner Psychologist

Band 8A

Barts Health is one of the largest NHS trusts in the country, and one of Britain’s leading healthcare providers.

The Barts Health group of NHS hospitals is entering an exciting new era on our improvement journey to becoming an outstanding organisation with a world-class clinical reputation. Having lifted ourselves out of special measures, we now have the impetus and breathing space to chart a fresh course in which we are continually striving to improve all our services for patients.

Our vision is to be a high-performing group of NHS hospitals, renowned for excellence and innovation, and providing safe and compassionate care to our patients in east London and beyond. That means being a provider of excellent patient safety, known for delivering consistently high standards of harm-free care and always caring for patients in the right place at the right time. It also means being an outstanding place to work, in which our WeCare values and behaviours are visible to all and guide us in how we work together.

Barts Health supports the Pregnancy Loss Pledge and commits to supporting their staff through the distress of miscarriage.

Band 7-8A Preceptorship or 8A Practitioner Psychologist

0.6 WTE permanent

** We welcome applications from newly qualified psychologists, through to those looking for an 8A position **

We are pleased to be advertising this post within Cancer Psychological Services (CPS) team based at St Bartholomew’s Hospital.  The role will contribute psychological thinking and direct care to all cancer pathways across Barts Health but there will be an emphasis on working closely with the Specialist Palliative Care Team. There is a strong emphasis within the team on disseminating psychological knowledge and skills across the cancer workforce through training, consultation, and supervision.  Current service developments are focused around addressing inequities in access to CPS and improving links with Talking Therapies.  There will be an expectation the post holder travels and works across multiple Barts Health hospital sites.  The are opportunities for funded CPD and joining a specialist supervision group (e.g ACT, CFT, Narrative, EMDR).

This post is suitable for those who are at – or ready to work at – band 8a level or for those who are newly qualified. If the appointee is newly qualified, they will be appointed at band 7 under a preceptorship process with a clear development plan established outlining required competencies to achieve over a 12-18 month period for successful progression to Band 8a.

The role will involve providing a clinical service to inpatients and outpatients and close working with MDT colleagues.  Though the service frequently provides direct support to individuals requiring specialist psychological intervention, our overarching aim is to improve the psychological wellbeing of all cancer/ palliative care patients and their families through the sharing of psychological knowledge and skills and service developments. Applicants should therefore be skilled and keen to engage in multi-disciplinary working.  The post holder may also be expected to provide line management and supervision to both qualified and unqualified members of the team.

Experience of working with people who have been diagnosed with cancer or other life limiting conditions and in multi-cultural settings is highly desirable.

For more information or an informal discussion about the post, please contact:
