We provide a full range of local mental health services to the Kingston, Merton, Richmond, Sutton and Wandsworth London boroughs, from multiple sites, as well as specialist forensic mental health services, including high secure services, at Springfield Hospital. Our general adult inpatient services are based at Tolworth Hospital and Springfield Hospital.
We are a dynamic, financially stable mental health trust which has consistently been rated ‘good’ by the CQC both overall and specifically for our acute & urgent care services. We are several years into a Trust Wide quality improvement programme involving all clinicians, which is already delivering results. We have invested in further improvements to our acute and urgent care services, including one of the UK’s first mental health A&Es (now evolving into a mobile service), as well as Recovery Cafes and a Psychiatric Decision Unit.

This post has become available due to the substantive post holder moving to another post within the Trust.
We are looking for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join the Service Line, on Rose Ward, an acute psychiatric ward at Springfield Hospital in Tooting. Rose Ward is a female ward with 18 beds plus 2 “surge” beds that are used at times of high demand. The ward has recently moved from Queen Mary’s Hospital in Roehampton to Springfield, as the Trust no longer provides inpatient services on that site.
The ward has a full multidisciplinary team including consultant, two trainee doctors, a specialty doctor (0.5 wte), psychologist (0.5 wte), OT, specialist nurses, activity workers, healthcare assistants, ward clerk and ward manager.

Swydd ddisgrifiad a phrif gyfrifoldebau manwl
- Medical leadership, working in the multi-disciplinary team and working closely with, and providing cross-cover to other Consultant Psychiatrists and occasionally the Associate Clinical Director within the Acute and Urgent Care Service Line.
- Overall responsibility for the day-to-day clinical care, risk assessment, risk management, initiation of medication, and the recovery focused care delivered by the ward team
- To fulfil the responsibilities as Responsible Clinician (RC) under the Mental Health Act for patients under their care
- Availability within normal working hours 5 days a week for urgent review and management of ward patients
- Management of complex cases
- Allocation of resources, in collaboration with the ward manager, to service users and carers.
- Ensuring the delivery of effective, efficient and safe, recovery focused mental health care
- Multi-disciplinary and multi-agency working with social care, statutory and voluntary and third sector partners as appropriate

Qualifications

- Primary Medical degree.
- Full GMC registration.
- MRCPsych, or equivalent.
- Included on the GMC’s Specialist Register or eligible for such inclusion.
- Higher Psychiatric Trainees are eligible to apply within six months of completing their CCT.
- Section 12 (2)/AC approval under the Mental Health Act or be willing to apply for such approval once in post.
Knowledge

- Completed minimum of three years full time training in approved higher psychiatric training scheme.
- A detailed knowledge of the Mental Health Act, the functions of the Mental Health Review Tribunals and Hospital Managers' Hearings

- Prior experience of working with service users with complex needs including challenging or offending behaviours in general or forensic settings
Ability to enhance specialty of mental health care provided through Management/Audit
