Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 8a Matron– Critical Care Outreach and Hospital at Night at St George’s Hospital.

To operationally lead the Critical Care Outreach and Hospital at Night teams and to provide advanced clinical expertise, knowledge and skills utilising clinical judgement skills and decision making in the care and management of acutely unwell patients.

This would include leading and participating in all variety of clinical emergencies, such as NEWS calls, medical emergencies and cardiac arrest calls, as well as assisting in the provision of level 2/3 care outside of the Critical Care Unit.

To lead and innovate nursing, allied health care professional & medical practice in the specialty of Critical Care Outreach and to ensure all Trust staff are best prepared to manage life threatening emergencies encountered during the course of their work To be a highly visible and proactive leader acting as a clinical resource and ensuring the sustained delivery of high standards of nursing care and service delivery.

To take responsibility for own evidence-based practice and to implement and add to the body of knowledge that supports clinical practice related to acutely unwell patients within the Trust, nationally and internationally. 

Main duties of the job

To lead on and promote educational strategies for professional groups with regard to the assessment, care, interventions and management of the deteriorating patient, patients who are acutely unwell, and patients who have been recently discharged from the Critical Care Unit and to assist the Critical Care Team with patients who have critical care rehabilitation needs.

To lead on and assist in the facilitation, organization and provision of education and training on the deteriorating patient.

To have a role with the Trust Quality Improvement team, leading QI initiatives within Critical Care and the wider remit of Outreach and Hospital at Night.

To be responsible for exploring current practice, identifying areas for development, and planning the appropriate change using current evidence to evaluate outcomes.

To be responsible for the quality of the patient’s environment and lead on facilitating changes which improve the patients experience To play a key operational role and maintain a proactive approach to managing patient flow through the service.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • First degree in Nursing (or equivalent) or health related subject or working towards it.
  • Nationally Recognised Post registration critical care course and/or Post registration specialist course
  • Mentorship qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Master’s degree Leadership qualification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of NHS & social care agenda - Professional/patient care agenda
  • Knowledge and application of management and leadership themes
  • Relevant experience at senior nurse level (band 7 or above)

Skills (Clinical)

Essential criteria
  • Models excellent clinical skills and has the ability to implement these in practice
  • Demonstrates up to date, evidenced based knowledge of current clinical and professional issues
  • Passion, understanding and commitment to Specialist Critical Care

Planning & Organisational

Essential criteria
  • Plan and organise across a broad range of complex activities, formulating and adjusting plans as required
  • Able to take responsibility for policy implementation and service development
  • Proven track record of excellent ability to co - ordinate the work of the multidisciplinary team and lead on any actions required

IT

  • Ability to use IT databases
  • Computer literate, proven ability to use word, excel and email
