Clinical Scientist

NHS AfC: Band 7

Job overview

The Neurogenetics Unit of the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery provides a regional molecular genetic service for inherited neurological disease and a national and international diagnostic service for rare neurogenetic disorders. It is merged with the Regional Genetics Laboratory at Great Ormond Street Hospital to form the lead Rare Disease Laboratory in the North Thames Genomics Laboratory Hub.
The laboratory is ISO accredited and there is a close association with clinicians and research groups at the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for and HCPC-Registered Clinical Scientist to join our team in a translational role (applications will also be considered from candidates working towards registration). This post is funded for 14 months in the first instance and will focus on the clinical application of long read sequencing (LRS), specifically working with UCL Queen Square and Great Ormond Street collaborators on LRS for diagnosis of mitochondrial disorders (mitochondrially and nuclear encoded), and detection/characterisation of repeat expansions in short tandem repeat expansion  disorders.
Previous experience in a diagnostic genetics laboratory is essential; no previous experience in neurology is necessary.
