Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity to join our small, friendly and innovative SLT team which is part of a well-established integrated multi-agency specialist learning disabilities team (Health and Social Care) based in Islington.   Islington is a culturally diverse borough with many multi-ethic, bilingual and multi-lingual speaking communities.

The post holder will be an autonomous practitioner. They will be responsible for delivering a comprehensive and specialist service to adults with learning disabilities with a wide range of complex speech, language, communication and eating, drinking, and swallowing programmes. They will be expected to work in a person centre way, supporting people with a learning disability to take an active role in decision making, planning and implementation of their care.

In addition to working in an established integrated multi-agency learning disabilities team, we have established links and meet regularly with our SLT Colleagues in the local Adult Services (community and acute) and SLT services across North Central London

We will consider applications from NQT as this post can be run as a development post/run-through from a Band 5 to a Band 6 once the relevant level of skills are met.   This has been done successfully for previous post holders.  The post holder will be have access to regular supervision from a senior SLT.

Main duties of the job

They will have excellent communication skills and will be able to communicate complex and sensitive information.   They will have good written skills e.g. report writing, presentations.   

They will work directly with adults with learning  disabilities  and their carers using a range  range of specialist assessment tools to evaluate communication and E&D and swallowing difficulties.

They will provide a range of specialist therapeutic interventions to support adults with learning disabilities' communication.

They will provide assessment and management of E&D, Swallowing difficulties 

They will have knowledge of AAC software and programmes.

They will deliver specialist training and presentations ,to a range of audiences/groups.

They will provide support to less experienced members of the SLT team

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc Speech Pathology or equivalent
  • HPC Licence to practice, and Registered member of RCSLT
  • Dysphagia trained
  • AAC trained
  • Sucessful completion of specialist short courses relevant including at least 1 of the following: Behaviours of Concern, autism, metal health, basic counselling

Skills & Abilities

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Experience with adults with learning disabilities
  • Experience of working with clients with AAC
  • Experience of working with clients with dysphagia
  • Knowledge of a specialist range of assessment tools and procedures to evaluate communication, speech & language and E&D and swallowing skills relevant to learning disabilities
  • Knowledge of the key characteristics leading to a specialist differential diagnosis relevant to the client group of adult learning disabilities
  • Knowledge of selecting and setting goals and evaluating outcomes
  • Knowledge of a specialist rane of therapeutic interventions relevant to adult learning disabilities demonstrating the evidence base for these approaches
  • The application of specialist knowledge of local cultural linguistic & demographic factors
  • Knowledge of multi-disciplinary team approaches
  • Knowledge of approaches to supporting less experienced SLTs, support staff, students
  • Basic understanding of clinical governance principles
  • Basic positioning relevant to the care of people with dysphagia
  • Approaches to support clients & carers with behaviour that challenges mental health needs, or in high levels of distress
  • Basic appraches to delivering presentations, training, and groups, and adapting style to a range of audiences
  • Understanding of the various strategic documents including at least 3 of the following e.g. Valuing People/Now, Confidential Enquiry into Premature Deaths in PWLD, LEDER, Mental Capacity Act, Reducing the Risk of Choking for People with a Learning Disability, Care Act, RCSLT Position Paper, Guidance for Commissioning AAC Services & Equipment
  • Knowledge of safeguarding
