Job overview

The clinical haematology team at BHRUT invite applicants for a substantive consultant post.

The post attracts 10 PAs delivered over 4.5 days, along with on-call commitment. You will provide a weekly general haematology new patient clinic, a weekly follow-up clinic with myeloma special interest comprising the majority of the clinic, and a weekly thrombosis clinic including new patients and follow up. You would lead the thrombosis MDT fortnightly in rotation with another consultant, and weekly malignant MDT. Clinics are supported by a specialist registrar and a haematology nurse specialist, each with their own area of special interest.

Main duties of the job

You will join a team of consultant haematologists with a strong teaching, laboratory and clinical reputation.

A commitment to attend ward patients is required. This is undertaken on a 2-week block rolling rota shared with other consultants (1:6). Full ward rounds will be undertaken twice a week when you are allocated to ward cover, with daily reviews required for new admissions and unstable patients. During weeks off ward cover, the dedicated full ward-round time will be allocated SPA time.

Working for our organisation

Under the leadership of our Chair Jacqui Smith and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, we provide care for the residents of three of the most diverse London boroughs. More than half of our 7,500 strong workforce are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and most live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.

Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London.

As we recover from Covid-19, we’re proud to be leading the way nationally in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The pandemic provided the drive for our teams to innovate and change.

We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and our performance against the four-hour emergency access standard remains challenged, in comparison to many other London trusts.

We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We’re also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Haematology department

The haematology service is delivered at BHRUT by a team of seven Consultant Haematologists (four full time/three part time), supported by eight Clinical Nurse Specialists, four registrars from the North East London rotation and three clinical fellows covering the day unit and supporting the registrars.

The team is based at Queen’s Hospital and treats a wide range of malignant and benign conditions, including level 2B malignant haematology patients (intensive therapy for AML, Primary Cerebral lymphoma and salvage chemotherapy for lymphoma). There is also a large population of patients with red cell disorders and the haemoglobinopathy team provides acute and community services for these patients.

The anticoagulation service is a well-established unit with strong leadership and extensive local protocols for managing our patients. There is a monthly haematology/obstetrics clinic, held jointly between a Consultant Haematologist and a Consultant Obstetrician.
