Job overview

An exciting 18month fixed term contract is being offered at MFT , at the Wythenshawe Hospital Site. 

As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, you’ll be experienced and operating as a Biomedical Scientist within Histopathology, in line with ISO 15189 standards and you’ll be rotated across the department, providing scientific services to patients and customers to aid pathological diagnosis.

You’ll deputise for senior team members and manage workflow, support with the management of documentation, and general overall performance.

You’ll also play a role in the training and development of scientific staff.

Opportunities to be trained to support dissection of skin specimens, with cross site support.

Working shift pattern - 7am-7pm Monday to Friday and rotated Sunday 8am-4pm. 

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will act as an HCPC registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist providing
scientific services to patients and customers to aid pathological diagnosis.
The post-holder will have a multi-section role within Histopathology, working in the
specimen reception, cut-up, main laboratory, and immunohistochemistry sections.
Additionally, the post-holder will be required to work within the non-gynae cytology
department, which includes Andrology.
The post-holder will perform a range of specialist technical and scientific activities within
the department and will take part in the organisation and monitoring of work flow in the
department. The post holder will assist the Biomedical Scientist Team Leaders in supervising
sections of the department and provide advice on a range of technical issues.
An extensive range of automated, semi-automated and manual techniques are utilised to
ensure appropriate testing of diagnostic samples. A high level of accuracy and attention to
detail are essential skills for the post.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • IBMS accredited Biomedical Sciences degree (or other degree accredited with IBMS)
  • Current HCPC registration
  • IBMS Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology or equivalent level of knowledge
  • Evidence of CPD

KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • Evidence and knowledge of Histological practice and theory.
  • Experience in BMS transfer, embedding, microtomy skills, special stains techniques and Immunohistochemistry
  • Good understanding of Health and Safety requirements within the scope of practice
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of using a Quality Management system
  • Basic IT knowledge

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Competence in a wide range of complex laboratory procedures
  • Experience in the day to day guidance and support of junior staff in undertaking the laboratory workload

SKILLS

Essential criteria
  • Able to organise and prioritise own work activities
  • Good verbal & written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
