Job overview

The Opportunity

We know that diverse boards make better decisions and Wirral Community Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust (WCHC) is committed to developing and diversifying the talent pool of aspiring National Health Service (NHS) non-executives. We want to support individuals to learn first-hand about the challenges and opportunities associated with being a non-executive director (NED) in today’s NHS.

Our Associate NED Development Role has been designed to help support the next generation of talented people into board level roles in the NHS. In particular, it aims to develop talented individuals who are underrepresented in current NHS boards.

Main duties of the job

The Programme

The successful candidate will be supported through a 24-month programme, providing them with a unique insight and experience in the role and responsibility of a NED. You will work alongside non-executive and executive board colleagues, taking an active role in board activity and being involved in collective decision making. WCHC will support the successful candidate to develop their NED readiness including identifying and bridging knowledge, skills and competency gaps. Examples of this could include:

  • Operating at board level in an organisation of significant size and complexity
  • Leadership competencies at board level
  • Transitioning from operational to non-executive roles
  • Understanding NHS structures and accountability, how the money flows, who are key partners, where regulators fit, and a board’s role in quality and safety.

Working for our organisation

Wirral Community Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust has been rated as Good by CQC (Dec 2023) with some outstanding areas.

As an aspiring outstanding Trust we have numerous policies and procedures in place which provide standard organisational ways of working, in line with organisational objectives, relevant legislation and requirements. Policies allow for continuity and consistency within the Trust. Employees must abide by and adhere to all Wirral Community NHS Trust’s policies, at all times.

WCHC value and promote diversity and are committed to equality of opportunity for all and appointments made on merit. Our Trust believes that the best boards are those that reflect the communities they serve.

WCHC particularly welcome applications from candidates from all under-represented minority groups (as per protected characteristics) but in particular candidates from local black and minority ethnic communities, who are currently under-represented in our non-executive roles.

The recruitment processes are conducted in accordance with the NHS Code of Governance to ensure that they are made on merit after a fair and open process so that the best people, from the widest possible pool of candidates, are appointed. The Trust will apply positive action where candidates achieve the same score and one candidate represents the minority group currently mostly under-represented at our Trust Board.
