Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to work with Clinical Education as part of the wider Education Team in our busy teaching hospitals .

This is a rotational post across our 3 sites.  The post holder will rotate through the Skills, Simulation and Resuscitation Services, providing education to all grades of staff and participating in trust wide audits which support the Patient Safety Agenda of the Trust.

You should be proficient in delivering basic clinical skills, and have experience of teaching, supervising and assessing in the healthcare setting.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be part of the Clinical Education Team working across the  LUFHT educational estate. The primary role will be to deliver all elements of  clinical education, including advanced resuscitation courses, clinical skills and  simulation, with contribution to other Trust education initiatives as required.

The post holder will work in conjunction with the Clinical Training Leads will identify core skills and clinical developments that will support service activity. This will include the development and delivery of clinical training to individuals, groups or teams providing specialist advice as required. This will include the delivery of insitu simulation and assessing the clinical environment for latent error. 

To update and review programmes of education to ensure that they follow
current evidence base/national guidelines. 

To provide support across the educational pathway including medical education and the Practice Placement Facilitators.

The post holder will be expected to lead quality improvement programmes that can promote safe patient care through education. 

To ensure appropriate supervision and mentorship is provided to the junior Clinical Educators, acting as a role model for high quality education delivery

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

❖ To undertake the teaching and facilitation across education in all areas of clinical education e.g. clinical skills, resuscitation and simulation. Including a requirement to qualify in, and deliver more advanced training such as the RCUK Advanced Life Support course and Simulation debriefing.
❖ Deliver educational programmes across Clinical Education, whilst supporting Medical Education and Learning and Development in this, ensuring that organisational requirements for education are met. 
❖ Plan and deliver specialist training / workshops to large groups and individual staff across the organisation, at all levels, using both formal training delivery and work place based approaches. Apply specialist knowledge and expertise in areas of team resource management in promoting patient safety. 
❖ Engage with all of the multi-professional learners across education, including the development of education packages for new and emerging roles e.g. Nursing Associates, Physicians Associates. 
❖ To support the Clinical Training Leads in the implement of robust evaluation methodology across education, measuring the return of investment on educational activities. 
❖ Support the Clinical Leads in implementing quality assurance measures across the educational pathway. Embracing the Quality Improvement methodologies whilst delivering on quality initiatives across the educational pathway that can impact on the delivery of safe patient care. 
❖ Maintain an up to date knowledge of adult learning methodologies, QI methodologies and active engagement with education research across the health education pathway. 
❖ To be involved and contribute to the continuous evaluation process across education 
including peer review and return of educational investment measures. 
❖ To provide mentorship and supervision for all junior staff within the team, ensuring that you act as a leader and role model the Trusts values and behaviours at all times.
❖ Assist the Clinical Skills  Lead in the design and delivery of the undergraduate syllabus including taking responsibility for an undergraduate curriculum each year.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Primary clinical qualification e.g. R.G.N or Allied Health care professional.
  • Graduate level Mentorship or a relevant, formal teaching and assessing qualification
  • Evidence of continuous professional development.
Desirable criteria
  • A recognised education qualification e.g. PG Cert Ed or willingness to work towards

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable post registration experience
  • Demonstrable experience of teaching, supervising and assessing healthcare students in the practice setting.
  • To have a working knowledge of Human Factors and how that impacts on patient safety.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of effectively developing and implementing new systems and procedures.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of governance and its relevance to clinical practice
  • To have a demonstrable knowledge of different methods and styles for teaching and learning, with the ability to incorporate adult learning theories.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and build effective relationships.
  • Ability to teach and facilitate in a variety of settings with both large and small multidisciplinary groups
