Job overview

The role exists to provide high quality and up-to-date education and training within clinical skills and simulation team. This includes the development and delivery of teaching and assessing the clinical skills of medical students, medical staff and other health care professionals, enabling them to deliver the Trust’s vision of Dedicated to Excellence.

The Clinical Skills Trainer will support the provision and continual improvement of appropriate, high quality in-house and external clinical skills education and development activity.

The post-holder will work collaboratively with the existing team to continue to build on and develop high-quality opportunities available to attract our future workforce and retain our current workforce.

Take on responsibility for personal development and support the development and supervision of others by developing and maintaining specialist knowledge within education practice.

To liaise with the appropriate Higher Education Institutes (HEI’s), clinical tutors and external resources, to ensure the training delivered meets national criteria.

 The Clinical Skills Trainer will work collaboratively within a highly motivated, skilled and engaged team committed to delivering best care for everyone and build and sustain successful working relationships with colleagues to foster a strong ethos of partnership working.

 

Main duties of the job

To work with guidance from the CSF on the planning, implementation, provision and evaluation of an ergonomically based specialized clinical skills training  programme.    Update the theoretical underpinning components: evidence based, best clinical practice and competency criteria, being aware at all times of statutory obligations and national strategies and their impact on service delivery.    Under guidance of the CSF, to audit and evaluate the development of both practice and skills training programmes.

To be a professional resource for students and staff; giving advice regarding teaching and the use of specialist equipment. To ensure as far as possible under the sphere of influence that; trainees are “fit for purpose and practice”.    Implement and maintain an effective record system (data base) of learners and any systems that are used within the team.

 To network and attend educational meetings, events and workshops within the trust, HEI’s and throughout the UK to keep informed of current best practice standards and initiatives and sharing information with the service users. Act as a professional resource for advice and education regarding knowledge and skills and in the use of the clinical skills models for the service users.    Work alongside the technicians in supporting them maintaining the clinical skills equipment and environment, teaching resources and records; to ensure efficient use of the clinical skills laboratory throughout the year.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Together with the CSF, liaise with the HEI’s and key health care professionals to ensure that clinical skills training is developed in line with changes in best practice standards, education and research, statutory obligations and national strategies.

Work alongside the technicians in supporting them maintaining the clinical skills equipment and environment, teaching resources and records; to ensure efficient use of the clinical skills laboratory throughout the year. 

Identify in liaison with the users of the laboratory and clinical tutors, the equipment purchase and maintenance requirements. 
 
Monitor usage and purchase of stock, equipment and stationery as required. Implement and maintain a booking room system for the clinical skills laboratory and simulation suite within the Prince William Education Centre booking policy.

Education, Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Professional Clinical Qualification under NMC or HCPC
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of professional portfolio and registration
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching Qualification or willing to undertake training

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • In depth post registration experience in health care
  • Experience of providing learning support
  • Sound clinical knowledge underpinned by evidence of theoretical understanding
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in designing, delivering, and evaluating programmes of training
  • Ability to interpret and analyse information, research and audit data to influence and initiate change

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Teaching / presentation skills and analysing and presenting information.
  • Personally resilient and able to manage complexity and work in an ambiguous or changing environment
  • Excellent verbal, written and numeracy skills
  • Good IT skills (knowledge of Microsoft 365 ,Word, emails, Teams, Share point, PowerPoint and Excel spreadsheets, (or willingness to learn).

  • Personally resilient and able to manage complexity and work in an ambiguous or changing environment
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to meet deadlines and complete tasks whilst paying attention to detail.
  • Able to take responsibility for own workload, manage time effectively, whilst consulting with others
  • Excellent Knowledge of clinical and professional requirements according to internal policies / standards and external bodies
  • Demonstrates ability to question and challenge clinical and education practice in a constructive way so that standards are continually evaluated and improved
  • Able to contribute to the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies/protocols/guidelines relevant to area of practice
