We are pleased to be able to offer an exciting opportunity to join the Electronic Patient Record (EPR) Programme Team at Northampton General Hospital. In partnership with our chosen supplier, we have embarked on our digital excellence journey to implement a nationally-leading EPR system that will transform the quality of care for our patients and staff by having instantly accessible information using the latest mobile technology, reducing paper usage and utilising clinical decision support tools.  

As the EPR Test Manager you will report into the EPR Applications Manager and be responsible for the testing functioning for The EPR Programme and all system upgrades, new deployments and system optimisation changes.     

You will manage the end to end test function including (but not limited to) development of test plans, test scripts, interface testing and creating test reports.  You will set the standards for testing activities by applying best practice and ensuring that auditability is maintained throughout the testing process. 

Main duties of the job

The primary focus of the role is to support the end-to-end test function including (but not limited to) development of test plans, test scripts, interface testing and creating test reports. The Testing Analyst will undertake the functional testing of third-party software ensuring quality standards are met.    

The post holder will also be in instrumental in delivering User Acceptance Testing (UAT) activity to ensure operational readiness and acceptance of software delivered and will be the advocate for QA best practices and lead initiatives.  

Travel to the hospital site will be required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key deliverables: 

·       You will be responsible for the development and design of the overarching testing framework for the Trust  based on expert testing knowledge and experience, tailored to the unique needs of the organisations.

·       You will manage the end to end test function including (but not limited to) development of test plans, test scripts, interface testing and creating test reports.  You will set the standards for testing activities by applying best practice and ensuring that auditability is maintained throughout the testing process. 

·       You will be responsible for creating the test strategies and test plans, using product specifications and information on Trust systems and business processes.  You will need to be able to assimilate highly complex information and facts requiring detailed analysis, translate and interoperate it into workflow or process so that a test script can be written which is understandable by your team and all other stakeholders involved in the testing process.

·       Responsible for the planning and execution of testing phases with designated Trust clinical and non-clinical users for new implementations and existing system upgrades. You will advise the users of the system software changes and ensure that all areas of the system are fully tested and that users are fully aware of the changes, providing testing updates to the EPR Applications Manager and the IT Project Manager (if relevant).  

·       The role will involve the day to day running of the testing function and will require the production of test reports and similar collateral but will also involve actively progressing work with the resources assigned to the work and escalation of any blocking items as appropriate. The ability to work autonomously will be crucial as well as the ability to manage a team for delivery.  

·       You will manage your allocated testing team’s activity on a daily basis to deliver a high quality service ensuring the team exceed agreed service level agreements. You will carry out work planning and prioritisation, escalating risks and issues where appropriate.

·       You will contribute to business cases and support longer term business planning.  

·       You will have excellent problem solving, communication and organisational skills, along with expert knowledge of testing and testing theory. A detailed knowledge of how computer systems support patient care will be essential as will experience of working in a system management role.    

·       You will be responsible for negotiating with third party suppliers and system users as necessary for test issue management, prioritisation and acceptance testing.    

·       Ensure the Clinical Safety Management system is followed and all clinical risks are assessed in conjunction with the Clinical Safety Officer.

·       Champion and role model the Groups values and behaviours and support others in doing so to deliver the Group Vision and Mission successfully.

·       Ensuring that systems knowledge is maintained, across the portfolio of applications that are supported by the department, of how systems are being used by the Trusts’ end-users to ensure that all existing processes are tested to support any bug fixes or software upgrades.

·       You will be expected to work flexibly to meet the demands of a 24/7 organisation.  This may mean, on occasion, working outside core office hours. In addition, the post holder will be expected to be available as part of the on-call rota as required.

·       You will be expected to make judgements on multi – stranded or complex IM&T problems, where you will need to analyses/interpret a range of options to come to a decision that is all agreeable to the relevant parties.

Testing Execution 

·       Use the testing framework to grow the group’s capability to undertake formal testing of 3rd party supplied systems in an efficient and timely manner, contributing to the clinical safety assessment and final sign off.

·       You will lead User Acceptance Testing (UAT) activity to ensure operational readiness and acceptance of software are delivered.

·       You will organize and lead initiatives to improve test processes, extend the use of tools / frameworks.

·       Using your extensive knowledge of systems and testing preparation you will actively plan all tasks required, assess required resources, determine timetable to fit within deployment project timelines, escalating issues and risks as necessary.

·       You will manage risk and issues logs, keeping information up to date in a timely manner.

·       Using expert knowledge. create / update test scripts for testing the Clinical and Patient Systems in conjunction with allocated testers.

·       Working autonomously to identify issues when testing, investigating issues by liaising with applications team leaders or the end-users, where necessary ensuring full replication steps are provided to laid-down procedures, passing issues to system suppliers’ support desks and following up issues with the suppliers.

·       Perform (project-level) test lead duties when needed including stakeholder discussions and status reporting.

·       Working with IT colleagues in coordinating system deployments and scheduling test activities.

·       Preparing and maintaining a library of test scripts and documentation.

·       Maintenance of an up to date domain plan for all systems, co-ordinating the use and maintenance of test environments for systems across the estate, ensuring best practices for data quality, data consistency and supporting needs of all projects across the programme.

·       Ensure that configuration knowledge of all the applications is maintained so that if required during testing, configuration changes can be made to the system and be sufficiently documented so that the changes can then be made to Live, Training and Pre-Production etc, in preparation for implementation planning and execution.

·       Reporting of issues found during testing and ensuring quality replication steps are provided for each issue, allowing suppliers to investigate the issues.

·       You will Manage the Test environment, ensuring the data is applicable to the agreed configuration  changes, working with the suppliers to ensure the systems is always at the latest version.

 Leadership 

·       You will manage the testing cycles, managing the testers in a matrix management way.

·       You will ensure best practice in managing staff is adopted and maintained, including regular performance appraisal, effective two-way communication and implementation of processes to ensure personnel work in a responsible, safe manner and have due regard for health & safety regulations.

·       Proactively and positively contribute to the Service lead Clinical Systems team by taking part in appropriate planning & development and providing digital services & solutions leadership.

·       Work closely with the Digital Transformation and Innovation services on upgrades and policies/procedures.

·       Contribute to the development and implementation of the Group Digital Strategy, in line with Group, Trust and National priorities and initiatives, and leading digital techniques.

·       Contribute to the financial performance of the Service, including achievement of financial targets, balancing potentially conflicting demands of budgetary requirements and service requirements.

·       Deputise for Clinical Applications Manager as necessary and where appropriate.

·       Identify skills deficits and create a plan with Clinical Applications Manager and Clinical Applications Team Leaders to ensure the team are able to fully take part in all aspects of the testing lifecycle.

Education, Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to Masters level education or equivalent level or equivalent experience delivering Digital services
  • Recognised testing qualification
  • Evidence of continuous personal and professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Project Management qualification, such as PRINCE II or experience of using structured project methodology

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Professional experience providing support for clinical systems
  • Leadership of complex digital/IT testing plans while also developing and maintaining high standards of quality
  • Advanced systems development skills and technical knowledge across a broad range of clinical systems and software
  • Knowledge of digital healthcare standards and NHS datasets and their relationship to coding, finance and commissioning
  • Experience of contributing to the development of policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrable experience of leading a team in an operational environment at a senior level (preferably in an NHS environment)
  • Demonstrable knowledge of clinical risk management policies and processes
  • Experience of developing and executing testing plans

  • Sufficient knowledge of NHS/Government policies, strategies and organisational relationships in relation Clinical Systems, to be able to advise stakeholders and develop proposals for the service area
