Job overview

We are looking to appoint to a whole-Time (10 PA) Locum Consultant in Spinal Injuries to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust based at the Princess Royal Spinal Injuries Centre, Northern General Hospital fixed term for 12 months.

We would welcome applications from candidates across the full spectrum of experience, from those who have recently completed training to those who have well-established careers.

Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Should any further vacancies arise shortlisted applicants will be considered.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will be responsible for the provision of acute management and long-term follow-up of patients admitted to the Centre. He/ She will share equitable responsibilities with his professional colleagues and will actively contribute to the governance arrangements of the Department.

The appointee will be expected to conduct multi-disciplinary ward rounds, goal planning meetings and to see out-patients. He/she will be expected to participate in research and teaching as well as participating in a 1 in 6 on-call rota.

The successful candidate will work according to the terms and conditions of the national consultant contract.

The successful candidate must be registered with the GMC with a valid licence to practice. For further information please visit the GMC website and click on the Registration and Licensing link. Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full and Specialist registration (with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • Name on the specialist register for relevant specialty or eligible within 6 months of the date of the interview.
  • If an applicant is UK trained, they must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Substantial experience in Rehabilitation Medicine preferably with spinal injuries as a major component, or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • MD or PhD or equivalent
  • Postgraduate qualification in a surgical specialty

Clinical experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work as an independent practitioner in spinal injuries.
  • Capable of providing comprehensive care to acutely injured patient with spinal cord injury including application of skull traction and reduction of cervical spine fractures.
Desirable criteria
  • Possess broad clinical experience in the field of specialised rehabilitation
  • Expertise in managing pressure sores and spasticity

Research

Essential criteria
  • Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate
Desirable criteria
  • Publications in Peer reviewed journals.

Teaching and training

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching student doctors and doctors in training at all levels

Continuous Professional Development

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months
Desirable criteria
  • Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio

Management and Administration

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of the understanding of the systems and structures of NHS Management

Clinical governance and audit

Essential criteria
  • Experience in performing clinical audit, quality improvement
Desirable criteria
  • Completion and publication of a substantive audit project or service improvement project

Personal attributes

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates behaviour consistent with PROUD values (see appendix) in all interactions with MDT.
  • Good oral and written communication skills
