Job overview

An exciting opportunity has become available in the role of Advanced Specialist Pharmacist for Gastroenterology & Hepatology at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust. The successful candidate will primarily be based at the Royal Stoke site, working as part of our growing Medicine team of pharmacists and technicians delivering a high quality clinical service on a daily basis to our gastroenterology and hepatology ward, as well as all the associated out-patient services including viral hepatitis and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The post holder will work closely with the wider multi-disciplinary team of clinicians, nursing staff and directorate management team working across the Specialised Medicine Directorate.

To be considered you will be an experienced clinical pharmacist, able to demonstrate ability in delivering high quality evidence-based, cost-effective pharmaceutical care for our patients. In addition, the ability provide financial and risk management support. We are looking for someone who has an enthusiasm for this specialism and the ability to work amongst a large team of clinicians and specialist nurses.

Main duties of the job

Utilise expert pharmaceutical knowledge to manage acutely ill patients in the gastroenterology and hepatology setting.

To utilise the skill of / work towards being an active independent prescriber.

Provide specialist prescriber support for complex and expanding medicine regimes e.g. high-cost drugs used within IBD and viral hepatitis.

Support flow with efficient discharge medication supply routes.

As with all our Advanced Pharmacist posts, this role has the responsibility of managing junior staff.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Masters degree in Pharmacy (MPharm) or equivalent
  • Registered with General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Postgraduate Clinical Pharmacy Diploma / MSc or equivalent Qualification - B8A
  • Postgraduate Clinical Pharmacy Certificate and working towards the completion of the Diploma - B7
  • Independent Prescriber with appropriate annotation on GPhC register or willing to undertake appropriate training to become an active independent prescriber
  • Commitment and evidence of professional updating and mandatory continuing professional development portfolio
Desirable criteria
  • Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Great Britain (RPSGB) and / or Faculty status
  • Formal management and / or leadership qualification
  • MSc Clinical Pharmacy
  • Member of United Kingdom Clinical Pharmacy Association and / or specialist group(s)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Comprehensive experience as a clinical pharmacist practitioner including a solid grounding in a broad range of clinical specialties. - B7
  • Extensive hospital pharmacy experience post Diploma - B8B
  • Broad knowledge of therapeutics and application to clinical practice
  • Experience in working directly with clinicians, the wider multidisciplinary team, patients and the public
  • Evidence of ability to appropriately recommend, substantiate and communicate therapeutic options to patients and healthcare staff
  • Education and training experience including supervision and appraisal, with feedback, of junior staff and students
Desirable criteria
  • Substantial post registration experience of UK hospital pharmacy practice.
  • Have recent clinical pharmacy experience in speciality
  • Experience working with clinical trials and knowledge of the regulations relating to them
  • Experience of directorate pharmacy services and / or writing drug usage reports
  • Experience of managing a team Management experience and / or experience of undertaking appraisals
  • Evidence of involvement in writing of Guidelines
