We are looking for a passionate and committed individual to work as a Maternity Support Worker (MSW) in the Community, band 3. This is an excellent opportunity to support the community midwifery team in Newmarket and surrounding areas.
The MSW is an important and integral part of the team and applicants must be willing and able to act on their own initiative and organise their workload effectively to ensure safe care to pregnant people and their families within West Suffolk Hospital community setting.
The post holder will be committed to supporting the Forest Heath team and wider community midwifery area.
This is a fixed term post with various hours available.
West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust is responsible for providing personalised care to approximately 2,400 women during their childbirth experience. We offer both choice of lead professional and place of birth at home, on our co-located MLBU or multi-professional labour suite.
Main duties of the job
This role is a community Maternity Support Worker (MSW) to the Forest Heath Team of community midwives based in Newmarket. The team consists of midwives and maternity support workers providing antenatal and postnatal care to families within our geographical area.
The primary role of the Maternity Support Worker (MSW) is to assist, support and work in collaboration with the midwife and the wider multidisciplinary team; to provide a safe and holistic approach to woman centred care. To carry out a plan of care, devised by the midwife, to pregnant people, babies, and families within the community setting.
The post holder is expected to undertake a set of defined competencies. Support will be given to employees to further develop their skills and explore pathways for progression where appropriate. Frequent Travel Essential - You will need to travel, so you must either hold a full, current driving licence and have access to personal transport or meet the mobility requirements of the role through other reasonable and suitable means.

Education and qualifications
Essential criteria
- Level 3 English or equivalent
- Level 3 Maths or equivalent
- NVQ level 3
- Care certificate
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of relevant educational achievements.
- NVQ in Health care
- Basic IT qualification
Experience and knowledge
Essential criteria
- Significant and relevant work/social experience which has utilised skills and knowledge that could be of benefit to post.
- Ability to work independently under indirect supervision.
- Ability to work with people as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- An understanding of the organisation of midwifery care.
- Basic understanding of NHS issues.
- Basic IT skills
Desirable criteria
- Can provide evidence of achieved competency of key clinical skills
- Previous experience of working within maternity, childcare or women’s health field.
- BFI 2 day training workshop

- To be willing to undertake training to be competent in the roles and responsibilities outlined in the job description within 3 months of commencement of the post.
