The Guernsey Health and Social Services Department provides integrated health and social care to the people of Guernsey and Alderney, it is the largest single employer in the islands with approximately 2,000 staff across the whole organisation.

The healthcare system in Guernsey is run along very different lines from that in the UK, although staff are trained in the same way and the proportion of qualified staff is greater than that normally found in UK Health Trusts. There is no NHS. General practices provide family doctor services on a private basis. There is one specialist practice which includes general surgery, general medicine, obstetrics and orthopaedics. The specialists and most GPs have access to hospital facilities. Fees for consultations are partly subsided by the States with the remainder being the responsibility of the patient or their medical insurers.
The Specialist Health Insurance Scheme covers all residents of Guernsey and its sister islands of Alderney, Herm and Jethou.
All hospital services are funded by the States with the cost of the acute private specialist services covered by the compulsory health Insurance Scheme. This means that residents are relieved of the potentially high cost of specialist medical treatment.
The Mental Health and Elderly Care services are based at the Castel and King Edward VII Hospitals respectively. Acute services are based a few minutes drive away at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital.
All nursing and midwifery staff are paid on the same salary scales laid down by Agenda for Change.
We know life can't be all fun and games and what matters is your career so when it comes to development, we'll make sure your career goes places. Our training also follows the Knowledge and Skills Framework, meaning you won't have to retrain should you return to the NHS.
The hospitals have a commitment to provide qualified nurses with the opportunity to maintain and develop their professional skills. A generous education and training budget is provided towards the achievement of these ends.
All new nursing staff attend a comprehensive three day induction programme, usually beginning on their first day. Wards and departments have individualised orientation packs, and each new recruit is allocated a mentor / facilitator to provide support and ensure that the induction process is successful.

Where is it? Guernsey is situated 30 miles west of the Normandy coast in France and 75 miles south of Weymouth in England and lies in the Gulf of St Malo.
How big is it? The island is approximately 24 sq. miles (63 sq. kilometres).
How many people live in Guernsey? According to figures released in March 2013, the population in Guernsey stands at 62,732.
What can Guernsey offer me? Guernsey offers you a completely different way of life. Be prepared for fantastic scenery, beautiful walks and cycle routes and a wealth of things to do. Islanders are extremely proud of their pretty, cobbled town that rises up from the impressive harbour front and cries out to be explored. Guernsey also boasts stunning views from the cliffs and the cleanliness of both the sea and its award winning beaches is well known. Sport is an important part of life in Guernsey. There is so much from which to choose both on and off the water.
