Clinical Fellow in Interventional Radiology

Locally Employed Doctor

Trosolwg o'r swydd

The Christie is a leading European cancer centre and serves a population of 3.2 million in the North West. The Radiology directorate provides a comprehensive oncological imaging service including general radiology CT and MR, US, diagnostic and interventional fluoroscopy, and diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine including PET CT.

Our facilities comprise a purpose-built MRI department that became operational in 2016 and is equipped with three 1.5T MR scanners and one 3T MR scanner; a CT department equipped with 3 scanners, two of which installed in 2023; one diagnostic and one interventional US rooms both equipped with new scanners in May 2024; and an X-Ray department with two rooms and portable scanners.

Our Interventional Radiology Department is located in the Integrated Procedures Unit, that opened in April 2017. It comprises two new interventional radiology fluoroscopy suites and an interventional ultrasound room.

The directorate is currently working on plans for the refurbishment of the CT and General Radiology departments, as part of which it is hoped to include a state-of-the-art hybrid interventional CT suite.

The directorate has had involvement with the Trust’s Proton Beam Therapy service, which became operational in December 2018. Our radiologists also provide expertise as part of The Christie PET-CT Academy, which was founded in 2016.

The post is principally to obtain specific education and training in interventional procedures as well as cancer imaging. It is provisionally split into 32 hours per week of direct clinical care (including Interventional Radiology alongside CT and MR onco-radiology) with 8 hours of protected research, administration and teaching. There are a wide variety of specialist MDT’s with sub-specialty interests welcomed.

There is a significant proportion of time dedicated to research and audit, and the successful candidate is expected to contribute to projects leading to scientific publications, as well as presentations at national and international meetings.

It is anticipated that the post will provide the opportunity to develop experience in Research Methodology as well as Clinical Governance, administration and management issues important for appointment as a Consultant Radiologist.

The post holder’s routine clinical work will initially be closely supervised but he/she will practice increasingly independently as his/her experience develops during the year. In turn, the post holder will be able to supervise Junior Radiologists as time and expertise progresses.

Teaching Commitment:

The department is active in teaching at ST level, with further commitments to regional and national radiology teaching.  Medical student, FY/CMT and non-radiology ST-teaching is also supported. The post holder will be expected to undertake interventional radiology lectures and tutorials to medical and non-medical staff in collaboration with, and independent of colleagues.

Multi-disciplinary team meetings:

Numerous cancer specific and dedicated interventional radiology MDT meetings take place.  The post holder will be expected to participate in MDTs, with subspecialist interests accommodated.

Clinical Governance:

The post-holder will be expected to participate in all relevant aspects of clinical governance, including maintaining and improving protocols, the consent process, discrepancy reporting, guidelines and clinical audit in conjunction with the other staff in the department.

In addition, opportunities will exist to get involved with national audit programs of the relevant specialist societies.

Office and Secretarial:

The Trust will provide shared office accommodation with other radiology trainees and fellows.  Secretarial support is shared between consultants.

Continuing Professional Development

The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.

The post holder will undertake CPD in line with the recommendations of the Royal College of Radiologists. He /she will make appropriate arrangements for study leave with colleagues and non-medical staff. Study leave will be limited to 10 days per year, but flexible working will be considered

Job Planning

PROVISIONAL ACTIVITY TIMETABLE

Both part time and full-time applications will be considered. The post will be offered as 40 hours per week, divided into 32 hours of Direct Clinical Care and 8 hours of Supporting Activity, this will be reduced proportionally for part time applications. An indicative timetable is described below (each session lasting 4 hours). Please note that an individual timetable will be agreed with the clinical director Dr Jon Bell, the educational supervisor, Dr Sean Tenant and the head of Interventional Radiology, Dr Mark Abel.  The exact timetable depends on the skills and desires of the successful candidate and on the needs of the department.

There is also the opportunity to do additional paid cross sectional reporting sessions, subject to demand.
