Job overview

Lancaster University’s Doctorate in Clinical Psychology offers exciting opportunities for innovative and enthusiastic individuals to join the programme team. Applications are invited from HCPC registered clinical psychologists who have a keen interest in the training and development of others.  

You will be employed by Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust and be based at Lancaster University. You will work as part of an experienced clinical team under the management of the Clinical Director. 

You will be involved in coordinating teaching and placement activity as well as visiting trainees on placement and monitoring their progress. You will also teach on the programme, contribute to supporting placement supervisors and be involved in the supervision and support of trainees’ assessments and research activities. 

You will also be involved in undertaking direct clinical work as part of the Clinical Psychology Service for medical Students and contribute more widely to the Health, Culture and Society elements of Lancaster University Medical School.

Main duties of the job

To work under the management of the Clinical Director to act as clinical tutor for a proportion of trainees employed on the DClinPsy. This involves the monitoring of practise placements and pastoral support. The job also includes contributions to the academic curriculum, examination and assessment and involvement with developments and innovations within the clinical psychology training programme. As part of the clinical psychology service to undertake direct clinical work with medical students. The post holder would also have the opportunity to undertake and supervise research within the programme.

Day to day duties will include: 

(i) placement aspects: specifically, monitoring of clinical placements, visiting trainees on placement, liaising with NHS supervisors, and monitoring trainee progress with placement goals

(ii) academic aspects: being involved in the delivery of teaching; (iii) involvement with programme related matters such as admissions and selection; examination and assessment; personal and professional development of trainees;

(iv) research aspects, as negotiated with the Clinical Director

(v) clinical aspects: undertaking direct clinical work as part of the clinical psychology service for medical students.

Education/Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • First degree in psychology, or an equivalent qualification, which confers eligibility for Graduate Membership for Chartership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society. Post Graduate Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (or its equivalent) as accredited by the British Psychological Society. Is registered as a clinical psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council. Training in clinical supervision of Doctoral Clinical Psychology trainees.

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and understanding of the theoretical and empirical foundations that underpin the practice of clinical psychology. Knowledge and skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, formulation, intervention and evaluation within a relevant specialty area. An ability to communicate highly complex information orally and in writing with clarity and sensitivity to a range of audiences. Physical skills with specific requirement for accuracy, including those necessary for I.T. and keyboard work; and psychometric testing. Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology relevant to the field of clinical psychology. Good organisational and time management skills, ability to plan and prioritize own workload. Capacity to plan, organise and initiate change flexibly within the context of available resources. An ability to identify and positively respond to issues of power, discrimination and difference. Evidence of continuing professional development.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Some supervised clinical experience working as a specialist clinical psychologist Experience of teaching, training and supervision.
Desirable criteria
  • Currently practising as a clinical psychologist. Experience and involvement in doctoral level clinical research. Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts. Experience of teaching, training and supervision of clinical psychology trainees
