An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Locum For Service Doctor to join the Oncology team at the Royal Surrey Cancer Centre The Royal Surrey County Hospital.  The Trust is delighted to invite an experienced ST3 + to join our friendly and motivated team for a fixed term period of 12 months.

 

The successful applicant will be based at the Royal Surrey in Guildford participating in clinics and carrying out ward rounds on our specialist inpatient Oncology ward and, depending on rotation, will participate in clinics at other cancer units within the area including Frimley Park, Ashford & St Peter’s and East Surrey & Crawley Hospitals.  In addition, all SpRs and Specialty Doctors participate in providing Acute Oncology Service (AOS) Registrar cover to our dynamic AOS service.  The appointee will be encouraged to develop their Oncology experience and appropriate tumour site specialisation.

Main duties of the job

This post is for a SpR LAS in Oncology, working alongside the existing Oncology medical staff. The successful applicant will be based at the Royal Surrey in Guildford participating in clinics and carrying out ward rounds on our specialist acute Oncology ward. There are also exciting opportunities to participate in clinics at other cancer units within the area including Frimley Park Hospital and Ashford and St Peters. 

The post-holder will be attached to a named Consultant/Consultant’s practise, and will work as part of this team, allowing for the development of a degree of site specialisation, with rotation between teams at intervals of 6-12 months to allow for a spread of experience. Whilst the needs of the service are paramount, individual training needs of the SpR LAS are taken into account in the job plans.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post-holder’s main duties are to provide support to the Consultants and include (depending upon experience):

•           In-patient care and ward rounds

•           Radiotherapy treatment planning and review clinics

•           Day case Chemotherapy clinics

•           Out-patient clinics at SLCC and in the peripheral clinics where appropriate

•           Take part in the Clinical Oncology Day Cover Rota

•           Cover for Specialist Registrars when they are absent on annual or study leave

•           Covering other absences within firms (depending upon experience)

•           Teaching and education of junior medical and other staff

•           Audit

•           To be part of an on call rota out of hours

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC
Desirable criteria
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of achievement of ST2/CT2 competences in relevant specialty at time of application
  • Experience in the prescribing of chemotherapy and management of treatment related toxicity
  • Experience in the management of Oncology patients and complications
  • Track record of engaging in clinical governance: reporting errors, learning from errors
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in the management of patients requiring radiotherapy
  • Teaching: evidence of interest and experience in teaching
