We are one of the largest oncology Trusts in Europe with an international reputation for clinical excellence, research and development.  This is a unique opportunity to work with us to contribute to the challenging and rewarding specialty of oncology to lead and further develop education and training initiatives within the clinical pharmacy service. 

Pharmacy education and training is going to be an exciting and challenging area over the next few years with newly registered pharmacists being qualified with independent prescriber status and the opportunity for the Christie hospital to host Foundation year pharmacists for the very first time.

We currently have an opportunity for a highly motivated, enthusiastic lead education and training pharmacist (band 8b) to join our team. The postholder will provide strategic leadership on pre and post registration pharmacy education and development at The Christie. We have wide-ranging educational opportunities in the department with our pharmacy technicians and early years pharmacists undertaking clinical diplomas as well as senior pharmacists embarking on DPharm / MSc programmes.  The postholder will be involved in a co-ordinating a range of activities to support the education agenda, to ensure the provision of an effective and efficient pharmacy service to the Trust, ensuring all patients receive a high level of service and care.

Main duties of the job

Develop and deliver an education strategy that supports the development and delivery of a high-quality pharmacy service.

To meet the training needs of pharmacy professionals and other multi-disciplinary staff within cancer, in order that they can undertake their roles in a manner which encourages safe, clinically effective, and cost-efficient use of medicines for these patients.

·       Support pharmacy professionals through their SACT accreditation, utilising the British Oncology Pharmacy Association Cancer Pharmacy Education and Training Standards.

·       Develop local training programmes incorporating both regional and national curriculums for cancer pharmacy professionals’ group by developing yearly training plans.

·       Responsible for assessing cancer pharmacy technicians and pharmacists as competent to undertake patient consultations within outpatient clinics and screen SACT.

·       Monitor trainee progress to ensure deadlines are met and liaising with relevant internal and external supervisors as required.

·       Develop a training matrix and workforce roadmap for internal staff to ensure all suitable training is carried out.

  • Responsible, with the assistance of the pharmacy transformation delivery manager (workforce), for the development of the pharmacy Learning Needs Analysis and subsequent funding bids for education and training.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Education: 

·       Identify and develop suitable practice and educational supervisors for training programmes in line with the department local Education & Training strategy.

·       Responsible for organising educational sessions e.g., journal clubs, case studies, tutorials, training sessions, external courses, reflective practice, and clinical supervision.

·       Co-ordinate and plan the induction programmes for new cancer pharmacy staff to ensure new starters are trained and accredited sufficiently to undertake their respective roles safely and effectively.

·       Directly train new pharmacy professionals on BOPA Cancer Pharmacy Education & Training Standards and all aspects of clinical pharmacy services

·       To develop, evaluate and coordinate the pharmacy elements of the nurses, doctor’s induction and mandatory training and selected elements of higher-level training.

·       To evaluate, coordinate and continually improve the training and accreditation programmes for cancer clinical pharmacy staff, whilst ensuring accreditation records are kept. The training and development needs of individuals must meet requirements for the current and future delivery of the Pharmacy service.

·       To support networking of professionals across the organisations, help to build a workforce who share best practice, encourage innovation and high performance - ultimately leading to better patient care, experience, and outcomes.

·       To collaborate with higher education providers and national education and training bodies to develop marketable specialist education and training courses.

·       Develop teacher practitioner and educational supervisor roles with the University of Manchester, ensuring teaching on the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes is delivered.

·       To support cancer pharmacy leads in the delivery of both external and in-house training programmes to enable pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and Foundation year Pharmacists / pre-registration technicians to meet their professional requirements and developmental needs.

·       Regularly evaluate effectiveness of training interventions introduced or provided.

·       To identify own training and personal development needs. To maintain a clinical expertise and develop areas of interest as appropriate and relevant to the substantive role and in accordance with the Organisation and Pharmacy strategy.

·       Act as a Practice Supervisor as required thus supervising and directing pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in the delivery of high-class pharmacy service.

· To be actively involved and coordinate training / teaching programmes, practice research and clinical or service improvement audits.

· To take responsibility for the recruitment and line management of foundation year pharmacists including those on the split industry scheme

·       Responsible for the co-ordination of school/college work experience and foreign pharmacist clinical internships

·  Responsible for the co-ordination and delivery of training for undergraduate university students including educational sessions, placements and research / project opportunities in collaboration with universities.

Service Development and Leadership: 

  • Conducts complex planning and organises provision of highly specialist service, plans & organises research opportunities, multidisciplinary teaching and audit to maintain and further develop strategies for service provision in order to meet the changing requirements of the Trust.
  • Establish a series of performance targets against which the success of the post will be measured and reviewed on an ongoing basis.
  • Demonstrate strong and effective leadership by promoting and modelling leadership behaviours.
  • Promote the specialist pharmacy service through building links and relationships across the Trust.
  • Identifies and develops service development opportunities. Take a pro-active role in the development and implementation of services in accordance with local, Trust and national requirements.

·       Work collaboratively with other organisations to encourage and support the implementation of creative and innovative service models to improve healthcare inequality and drive efficiencies across the system.

Expert Practitioner:

·       To provide highly specialist clinical pharmacy services to a disease group and wider MDT in accordance with all departmental, Trust and national standards, procedures and policies.

·       Provision of highly specialist pharmaceutical expertise and clinical advice to optimise individual patient care through participation in the multidisciplinary team meetings, consultant ward rounds and outpatient clinics.

  • To demonstrate the ability to apply expert clinical knowledge and advanced clinical reasoning and judgement in the management of complex cases.
  • To manage difficult and ambiguous clinical problems and make decisions with limited information, or where the evidence is lacking within scope of competence.

·       Accountable for own professional actions: guided by national protocols, legislation, hospital formularies; lead specialist in own area.

·       Communicates highly complex drug or medicine related information to prescribers, clinicians, patients, relatives, some of which maybe highly sensitive or complex in nature and may be challenged. The post holder must have the highest level of interpersonal and communication skills due to the nature of the role undertaking consultations often in highly emotive circumstances.

  • To be trained as a pharmacist independent prescriber and prescribe to appropriate patients in agreement with the relevant Consultants.
  • To work autonomously and demonstrate accountability in managing own clinical caseload.
  • Documents consultation outcomes / interventions / advice regarding patient care in the medical notes and report medication errors via the Trusts’ incident reporting system
  • Utilisation and working knowledge of multiple EPMA systems, Trust resources and medicines information databases to facilitate a personalised approach to patient care.
  • Work in partnership with patients and their carer(s) to improve their understanding of medications and addressing any issues around adherence or polypharmacy.

Medicines Management:

·       Responsible for the development and implementation of the disease group medicines optimisation agenda and all associated policies and guidelines.

·       Collaborate with the lead Consultants to develop a specialist medicines work plan and guideline which can be utilised within the Trust and as a reference across the GM Cancer Network.

·       In conjunction with the lead consultants, submits new drug applications to DTC and Chair’s approval requests for named patient funding, thereby minimising delay to the patient.

  • Promote UKMi-approved medicines information resources to support clinicians within the Trust in the safe and evidence-based prescribing of drugs.
  • Make sustainable choices around medicines where appropriate to reduce carbon footprint of the Trust and help the NHS supply chain achieve the net zero target.

Essential criteria
  • Vocational master’s degree in pharmacy
  • GPhC registered pharmacist
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent.
