Main duties of the job
An exciting opportunity has arisen within Southampton Children's Hospital, for a Ward Leader 12 month secondment. This is to cover maternity leave.
G3 is a busy 16 bedded ward with 5 dedicated high dependency beds. The ward has patients of all specialities and also specialises in complex spinal and orthopaedic surgery and trauma.
We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic person with good communication skills who likes to problem solve.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
a) Develop and maintain a ward/department philosophy that has the patient at the centre of care delivery. b) Be the primary focus within the ward/unit environment. c) Provide professional nursing leadership at ward/unit level and work with the Matron to enhance nursing practice and strategy. d) To work in partnership with the Lead Clinician and ensure accountability for the delivery of the quality performance agenda. e) Manage the ward/unit and be responsible for ensuring 24-hour cover for the services provided and skill mix required. f) Be a role model for all and contribute effectively to inter-professional team working. g) Incorporate the Matron’s ten Key responsibilities in the role as laid out in ‘Modern Matron’ – Improving the patient experience (DoH 2003). h) Facilitate evidence-based care and act as a clinical expert at ward/unit level. i) Evaluate the relevance of changes in clinical practice and then support and facilitate implementation in the clinical area. j) Develop a quality learning environment linking education and training with the delivery of high standards of patient care and retention and recruitment of staff. k) Undertake nursing bleep holding responsibilities within designated area. |

Essential criteria
- 1st Level Registered nurse on relevant part of the NMC Register
- Recognised mentorship qualification and experience as a Sign Off mentor
- Degree or working towards
- Completion of appropriate specialty Course
- Higher Education Institute approved course in supporting learners in practice. Supporting a range of learners in practice Supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice
- Extensive experience in specialty to include considerable experience at Band 6 level
- Evidence of clinical leadership ability
