We are looking for a suitably skilled and experienced radiographer, who has specialised knowledge of general imaging, to help develop, inspire, and support Central Radiology as an Advanced Clinical Specialist. The successful candidate must be innovative, organised, inclusive, compassionate, knowledgeable, and adaptable, providing positive leadership throughout Radiology.  Strong interpersonal skills are essential for this role. This exciting role offers the opportunity to use your technical knowledge, passion and leadership to ensure a high quality imaging culture within the general imaging environment (including theatres and fluoroscopy).

We have 2 vacancies available. Vacancy 1 has a bias to general planar and static fluoroscopy. Vacancy 2 has a bias to general planar and mobile theatre imaging. Please specify in your supporting information if you have a preference of imaging speciality/vacancy.


Successful applicants can be offered a development role (Band 6 to 7 Preceptorship). This supports the band 6 radiographer in developing their skills and demonstrating their ability to work as a band 7. The preceptorship will have the duration of 3-6 months. The transition is competency based and during the preceptorship period the radiographer will be expected to complete the required assessments/stages to achieve the required competencies.

We are a large dynamic, multicultural team of radiographers with a wide range of expertise.

We comprise of the following areas:

Main X-ray
This area provides general, fluoroscopy and mobile radiography for adult in-patients and out-patients. There are 5 DR X-ray rooms, 2 state of the art digital fluoroscopy rooms, and a fleet of DR mobiles. There is also a Xograph DR Dental Imaging room.

Emergency X-ray.
This area provides adult and paediatric trauma radiography for the Emergency Department and Major Trauma Centre plus emergency and general theatre imaging.
There are 3 DR x-ray rooms, DR mobiles and a fleet of up to date flat plate image intensifiers undertaking a wide variety of complex imaging procedures including mobile 3D imaging.

Interventional Radiology 
Our interventional Unit carries out a wide range of complex vascular, non-vascular and oncology procedures in 2 Siemens interventional labs in additional to a Hybrid Lab. The unit is the cancer centre and major vascular hub within the region.

Royal South Hants X-ray
This satellite unit, near the city centre, provides imaging for adult outpatient clinics and GP referrals and has 4 DR x-ray rooms.

Advanced Practice
We currently have radiographers reporting in MSK, Chest and Abdomen Planar imaging and specialist radiographers performing and reporting Barium and Video Fluoroscopy Swallows. We also have a radiographer Lithotripsy service. UHS also offers exceptional leadership training in both formal and informal settings.

The role involves:
•    Working with others to deliver an effective and efficient high quality imaging service that meets the needs of both patients and referrers. 
•    Promoting planar and fluoroscopy excellence within the Radiographic team
•    Providing expert advice on specialist equipment
•    Providing appraisals, education, and training to the staff group to ensure competency, 
•    capability and development.
•    Working within all four pillars of advanced practice (Advanced Clinical Practice, Leadership and Management, Education and Training, Research and Service Development) 
•    Superintendent Level Line Management duties as part of the management team
•    Education and training of radiographers and Registrars within area of speciality (theatre imaging)
•    Undertaking general radiography to a high level of expertise. To use initiative in adapting techniques to optimise image quality and diagnostic yield.  To utilise in depth knowledge and experience to advise and problem solve when confronted by clinical and technical issues

•    Demonstration of knowledge of other departments works practice with which radiology has a 
        significant interface.
•    Evidence of previous change management
•    Evidence of previous teaching experience
•    Ability to make decisions and support the team
•    Able to deliver specialist training and education in both formal and informal settings

The role requires a commitment to on call and occasional weekend working.

  • Current HCPC registration
  • Level 7 Post graduate qualification in area of clinical specialism or equivalent experience
  • Sound knowledge of Radiation Protection regulations including IR(ME)R 2017, IRR 17
  • Evidence of ability to support a range of learners in practice or supporting colleagues to promote learning in practice
  • Equipment Super user within area of speciality
