Job overview
To be a role model for the phlebotomy department and to ensure the provision of a high quality and professional service, and provide training to both internal and external users of the phlebotomy training facilities.
Main duties of the job
· To provide the administration and training functionality to the phlebotomy service, provide supervision and day to day organisation of the phlebotomy team/service.
· To participate, when required, in the provision of an efficient and effective phlebotomy service to the patients and medical staff at the Royal Surrey Hospital Foundation Trust, GP surgeries and other external sites.
· Cross site working and travel may be required; however Royal Surrey County Hospital will be the prime site. BSPS Pathology Network provide a service to Ashford and St Peter’s Hospital, Frimley Park Hospital, Heatherwood Hospital, Royal Berkshire Hospital, Royal Surrey Hospital and Wexham Park Hospital

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Part time: 26 hours per week
Diagnostics and Clinical Support Services in partnership with
Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services
An opportunity has arisen for an experienced adult and paediatric Phlebotomist with leadership abilities who is ready for a new challenge as a Team Leader in Phlebotomy.
The Phlebotomy Team consists of approximately 30 part-time members of staff. Playing an integral role within Pathology, providing a valuable service throughout the hospital by taking blood samples from in-patients, out-patients and community outreach services.
Applications are invited from motivated individuals with good communication, organisational and interpersonal skills and confidence in presenting. The successful candidate will be a role model for the Phlebotomy department, ensure the provision of a high quality and professional service and provide training to both internal and external users of the phlebotomy training facilities.
This challenging and exciting role requires the ability to think quickly, work independently and remain calm under pressure. The successful candidate will be responsible for day to day service management and administration, working closely with the Phlebotomy Manager on a range of operational and administrative tasks, whilst taking a leading role developing, implementing and reviewing the training requirements for the department.

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- GSCE’s (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics at grade C/ Level 5 and above
- Certificate of competence in adult venepuncture
- Certificate of competence in paediatric phlebotomy
- Experience in using patient administration systems
- Experience of mentoring, training or supervising others
Desirable criteria
- Teaching or Assessor qualification
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Good knowledge of anatomy and physiology relevant to phlebotomy and medical terminology
- Good knowledge of routine tests and sample requirements
- Good knowledge of Health and Safety regulations at work
- Good knowledge of Infection Control practices
- Extensive phlebotomy experience (meeting current job description and person spec for role)
- Competent in obtaining samples for blood culture
Desirable criteria
- Ability to perform cannulation
