Job overview

We are seeking an inspiring, dynamic and authentic nurse leader with a shared vision in delivering the very best patient experience and outcomes, whilst continuing to strive for quality improvements in partnership within the multi professional team.  

The matron will embrace compassionate leadership and be a significantly autonomous professional clinical manager, responsible for multiple clinical services and staff. You will have a strong ability to lead the team whilst supporting the delivery of the Divisional Directors Quality and Nursing agenda including patient safety and experience. 

A vision for strategy planning for the services will be an important part of the role working closely alongside the triumvirate service team, ensuring the nursing voice is strong using negotiation and persuasion skills. 

 

Main duties of the job

The successful matron will have a valid 1st level registration with the nursing and midwifery council, with an ambition to study towards higher level education, incorporating research based clinical practices within quality improvements; whilst supporting the Trusts ambition to achieve University Status.

The matron we are looking for will be compassionate, transformational and inclusive with a supporting focus to achieve the division’s model employer aspirations.

The Matron will ensure all clinical, quality, safety, financial and workforce delivery for all service lines in relation to clinical outcomes, clinical efficiency and service line reporting.

Job purpose;

1. To work in alignment with the Matron handbook (NHS England and NHS improvement 2020) 

2. To be visible, accessible, authoritative and influential in presence to ensure the fundamentals of care are delivered effectively and efficiently.

3. Provide professional leadership to nurses, midwives and managers, acting as a role model within the Service lines, Division and the Trust ensuring that competence in managerial and clinical practice is both developed and maintained.

4. Provide assurance to the Divisional Director of Quality and Nursing that there is continuous improvement in the delivery of clinical services and are tailored to the needs of the patients.

5. Provide clear clinical leadership for nursing and take responsibility and accountability for specific clinical services, wards and departments balancing these with the overall Trust responsibilities

6. Work in partnership and collaboration with other Matrons, Service Directors and General Managers within the Division, leading on clinical governance and risk agendas for specific services, ensuring dovetailing of strategic and operational roles and responsibilities.

7. Provide nursing leadership, set and maintain professional nursing standards, provide professional nursing advice and direction to the Specialty Director, General Manager and to other colleagues within the Division. The Matron will be professionally and managerially responsible for the named ward/department sisters/charge nurses.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Active registration with the NMC
  • United Kingdom recognised Degree in Nursing or equivalent
  • Masters Level Study or willingness to undertake
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of professional portfolio and registration revalidation

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience (through placement or employment) of working in an acute clinical environment
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience in a relevant speciality

Knowledge/ Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to prioritise own workload and that of others as appropriate
  • Personally resilient and able to manage complexity and work in an ambiguous or changing environment.
  • Excellent presentational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrates ability to maintain and contribute to the development of standards of practice, conduct or decision making in conjunction with team, senior nurses, Specialty and Divisional Triumvirate
  • Demonstrates ability to use clinical reasoning skills and techniques to assess, plan, deliver and evaluate patient care.
