Neuro Rehabilitation Physiotherapy Lead

We are looking for a highly motivated senior physiotherapist to lead our neuro rehabilitation service within the medical and clinical oncology team. The candidate must be able demonstrate the ability to make confident decisions with strong leadership and excellent communication and management skills. We also promote skills sharing between occupational therapy and physiotherapy.

The Neuro Rehabilitation Lead will provide clinical and operational leadership for the Clinical & Medical Oncology physiotherapy service for patients with neuro rehabilitative needs including metastatic spinal cord compression.

The post holder will link internally within the Trust to provide best care for this patient cohort as well as linking externally to GM and to national networks as well as providing expert advice on best evidenced practice within the Trust. The Neuro Rehabilitation lead will support staff, service and policy development within the clinical area, as well as clinical teaching of staff and undergraduates on placement. 

You will be supported to develop in all 4 pillars of practice as a physiotherapist and The Christie are able offer to offer a wide range of educational and learning opportunities

You will have the opportunity to contribute, facilitate, design and lead quality improvement projects through research and audit with the aim of enhancing and promoting the value of Physiotherapy in cancer care.

The post-holder will lead the Physiotherapy service within neuro rehabilitation to deliver high quality assessment and specialised interventions for our patients.  They will be responsible for:

-        Providing day to day management of physiotherapy staff members of the clinical and medical oncology team within neuro rehabilitation needs

-        Effectively managing clinical time versus managerial responsibilities.

-        Contributing to and supporting the development of the neuro rehabilitation physiotherapy services within the Trust

-        To work autonomously providing specialist assessment, interventions and advice to patients in the specialist clinical area

-        Participate in staff and student supervision

The successful candidate will be required to work flexibly including potentially  6 or 7 day working, participate in clinical audit, research, CPD and the in-service training rota, the physiotherapy on call rota and complete the relevant mandatory training.

Clinical

  1. To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own clinical caseload and to manage the clinical risk within own caseload.
  2. To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive and timely patient treatment records in accordance with Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP), Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and local service standards of practice.
  3. 3. To undertake specialist, advanced assessment of patients with neurological conditions including those with diverse neurological or complex presentations/multi pathologies; to use advanced clinical reasoning, analytical and investigative skills and manual assessment techniques to interpret clinical and non -clinical facts in order to provide efficacious patient centered interventions
  4. To formulate and deliver an individual physiotherapy treatment programme to patients with neurological conditions based on a high level of knowledge of evidence- based practice and treatment options
  5. To interpret a range of clinical and non-clinical information in order to formulate a clinical opinion;  to recommend best course of physiotherapeutic intervention, to inform and influence discharge plans, and to advise and plan further rehabilitation elsewhere.
  6. To evaluate patient progress, reassess and alter treatment programmes as required.
  7. To assist in the development of neuro rehabilitation  service to ensure effective evidence based treatment to the patient and to develop the skills required to undertake this
  8. To provide advice on physiotherapy care and treatment based on theoretical knowledge and relevant practical experience and to be consulted frequently for specialist  advice and guidance by more junior team members and other health care practitioners within and external to the Trust.
  9. To assess and evaluate the clinical competency of more junior staff within the clinical section.
  10. To work within Trust, CSP and HCPC clinical guidelines and have a proficient working knowledge of national and local standards and monitor quality of practice of self and others.
  11. To ensure the clinical documentation of staff within the clinical team meets CSP, HCPC and local service standards.
  12. To comply with professional standards, national standards for neuro rehabilitation and local guidance on patient consent in order to; assess patient understanding of treatment proposals and gain valid consent. This will include working with patients who lack capacity to consent
  13. To lead on  equipment competency training around brace fitting  in order to demonstrate responsibility for the safe and competent use of this equipment, patient appliances, aids used during the therapeutic episode, and, to be responsible for the safe and competent use of equipment by patients, and staff and students who are under supervision.
  14. To take additional responsibility (in addition to existing responsibilities and caseload) from other senior staff e.g. during unforeseen or sudden absence of other staff within team.
  15. To represent the Physiotherapy Service and /or individual patients at multiprofessional team meetings, to ensure the delivery of a co-ordinated multiprofessional service, this will include discussion of patient care, patient progress and involvement in discharge planning.
  16. To be an active member of the physiotherapy on-call emergency respiratory rota.
  17. To fit patients with Spinal Cord compression with orthopaedic collars.
  18. To be responsible for the supervision of student physiotherapists. 
  19. To provide specialist physiotherapy advice and input at MDT meetings, clinics and case conferences.
  20. To use advanced communication skills when providing and receiving all patient related information.
  21. To work collaboratively with other members of the multi -disciplinary team to ensure shared knowledge and decision making in the best interest of high quality patient care

Professional

1. To demonstrate a robust understanding of clinical governance, clinical risk, and to be able to apply this understanding to clinical practice.

2.To be responsible for maintaining own capability and competency to practice through CPD activities and maintain a portfolio which reflects personal development in order to maintain HCPC & CSP (or equivalent professional body for physiotherapists qualified overseas) registration.

3.To ensure that own clinical practice and that of staff and students under professional supervision meet the required professional standards of physiotherapy practice.

4.To utilise specialist, clinical expertise to train, educate, guide and support registered and non- registered staff.

5.To maintain and develop current knowledge of clinical practice development and evidenced-based practice, analysing current research and discussing and implementing changes in clinical practice accordingly

6.To work within the guidelines of the policies, procedures and standards of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.

7. To be an active member of the In-service training programme.

8.To disseminate knowledge of physiotherapy neurology in an oncology setting by participating in the organisation of and presenting at courses, study days and conferences locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

9.To undertake annual performance development reviews with staff.

10. To provide line management to qualified and non-qualified staff within the team.

11.To participate in research/ audit into specific areas of clinical practice for the benefit of the service

12.To provide a physiotherapy contribution into multidisciplinary service delivery and policy projects within the trust ( e.g. implementation of NICE guidance documents)

13.To raise awareness of the role of the physiotherapist in neuro oncology.

14.To communicate potentially difficult clinical or non-clinical information to staff. This may include feedback about individual performance, or dealing with conflicting advice and opinions about clinical situations

15.To act as a role model and ensure compliance with The Christie’s values and behaviours

Service Development

1. To regularly initiate, direct and participate in working parties developing service or policy changes in respect to Physiotherapy practice within neuro rehabilitation which may involve or impact on other services and users across the Trust.

2.To utilise clinical expertise for ensuring that quality standards and effectiveness of patient care are continually improved within the clinical section.

3.To ensure that all staff within the clinical team implement policy and service developmental changes.

4. To propose pathway changes concerning the physiotherapy management of patients and to guide the team to provide an efficient and effective service

5.To work with the Rehabilitation Manager in the developing the strategic and operational management of the Clinical and Medical Oncology Physiotherapy Service within Neuro rehabilitation and generally

Planning and Organisation

1. To be responsible for day-to-day operational management of a clinical team by organising and planning of the clinical caseload and staffing resource to meet competing service and patient priorities, frequently readjusting plans as situations change/arise and balancing other patient related and professional activities in accordance with professional and service standards. This includes service planning out of hours during weekdays and Bank Holidays and weekends.

2.To liaise across multi professional groups to ensure that the clinical service delivery is co-ordinated with others who may be involved in patient care.

3.To provide a safe, efficient and effective physiotherapy service to patients within the clinical area by responsible and appropriate management, co ordination and supervision of staff on a daily basis.

      4.To ensure that, the post holder maintains timely and effective communication with the Rehabilitation Manager e.g. concerning changes to the service and to ensure the quality and effectiveness of care for their patients.

Education, training, research & audit

1.To undertake the measurement and evaluation of own work and current practices through the use of evidence-based practice projects, research, audit and outcome measures, either individually or with more senior physiotherapists.

2. To be aware of developments in physiotherapy practice in general and own area of specialism in particular and to apply this to practice as necessary.

3.To influence critical appraisal discussions at team level.

4.To teach and train staff within the team and to deliver presentations to larger groups of staff across physiotherapy and other professional groups.

5.To competently educate undergraduates having completed appropriate clinical educator training at local HEIs.

6.  To undertake data collection and  audit projects for service quality improvements and as part of the Physiotherapy audit programme and to develop appropriate outcome measures
