We have an exciting opportunity available for a full time consultant neurosurgeon (adults) with a specialist interest in neuro-oncology to join our team to start in September 2024.

Your Responsibilities

What you’ll do

This is a full-time post as a consultant neurosurgeon with a specialist interest in neuro-oncology. The department has separate rotas for spinal surgery, adult cranial neurosurgery, and paediatric neurosurgery. This post is an adult cranial job working alongside the 3 other neuro-oncology surgeons, Mr Grundy, Mr Durnford and Ms Roach as part of a comprehensive multi-disciplinary team delivering all neuro-oncology surgery for the region. What we’re looking for

The successful applicant will be sub-specialty fellowship trained in neuro-oncology surgery in a nationally approved fellowship. This role will develop research, clinical trials and education in neuro-oncology surgery and the successful applicant will be expected to be qualified and experienced in delivering on this entire portfolio. The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • FRCS (Neurosurgery) or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • MSc or equivalent in Research
  • In date GCP training certificate

Previous or relevant experience

Essential criteria
  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • Able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in general emergency neurosurgery
  • At least 12 Months post-CCT Fellowship in neuro-oncology surgery
  • High level of experience in complex glioma surgery including awake craniotomy
  • Experience of surgery for metastatic disease, meningiomas, intra-ventricular tumours
  • Experience of research with publications and managing clinical trials
  • Experience of day-case surgery
  • Experience in image guidance including intra-operative MRI and USS
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of DTI/Tractography and application in awake surgery
  • Course on leading techniques in Neuro-oncology surgery
  • RCS (England) approved fellowship
  • Supervising research by junior staff
  • Evidence of service improvement
  • Consultant level experience in neuro-oncology
  • Consultant experience of adult and paediatric on-call
  • Consultant level experience of leading independent complex glioma surgery including awake procedures
