Main duties of the job

The Medicines Management team consists of pharmacy technicians and support workers, providing ward based services covering the majority of inpatient areas of Southampton General Hospital. Delivering a forward thinking and developing service the Medicines Management team work closely with each other and pharmacist colleagues to play a vital role in the patient journey and ensuring patient safety.
With an in-house training programme we support and encourage our staff through their development. With opportunities to work on projects, be involved in audits and contribute to the training and mentoring of staff this is an excellent opportunity to join a friendly, patient focussed team. 
The department is moving towards 7 day working. All staff are required to contribute to extended hours, weekend and bank holidays as part of their core hours. Weekend working will be 1 weekend in 6 and in addition no more than a 1 in 10 late night commitment unless specifically agreed on appointment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Working as part of a team you will;
•    assess patient’s medication brought in from home for use during their inpatient stay
•    manage and supply patient specific medication and ward stock
•    label, dispense and transport medication at ward level and within dispensary
•    assess and return medication to stock and transfer medication between areas
•    update ward plans and liaise with other Medicines Management and pharmacy staff to provide near-patient services, assisting with timely delivery of pharmacy services and patient discharges around the Trust

For this role you will;
•    need to have, or be working towards NVQ Level 2 (with a minimum of three core competencies completed) in Pharmaceutical Services or equivalent (unit 204 of NVQ 2 and hospital experience would be an advantage)
•    be enthusiastic about working in a team, comfortable working individually and dedicated to providing the best possible service for the best possible patient outcome 
•    have experience working in pharmacy and be keen to develop and contribute to an emerging role
•    have excellent written and verbal communication skills
•    be self-motivated, flexible and adaptable.

Qualifications / training required

Essential criteria
  • NVQ 2 in Pharmacy or other Level 2 approved GPhC qualification for pharmacy support staff or equivalent experience
  • Other healthcare qualifications
  • GCSEs in science-based or other role specific relevant subjects
Desirable criteria
  • 2 GCSE’s or equivalent grades A* - C or 4-9 in English and Maths (If qualifications gained outside the UK evidence of equivalent standards must be demonstrated at interview)
  • Supervisory qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience of supervision

Previous or relevant experience necessary

Essential criteria
  • Use of information technology in the workplace or within education or voluntary sector
  • Standard keyboard skills
  • Previous pharmacy experience (hospital or community) or supervisory experience
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience in health or social care (if not pharmacy)
  • Experience in stock control i.e., receiving, maintaining and / or issuing stock
  • Clinical trials or research experience (Clinical trials only)
  • Use of till and / or handling money in a work environment (RSH posts only)

Aptitudes and skills required

  • Communicate effectively with others in English both in speaking and writing
  • Able to demonstrate ability to pass Numeracy test at interview
