Specialist Midwife for Perinatal Pelvic Health

Band 6

Job overview

The successful candidate will assume the role of lead midwife for the Perinatal Pelvic Health Service, demonstrating an in-depth understanding of anal sphincter injury implications and perineal suturing practices. Collaborating closely with midwifery and obstetric colleagues, the individual will strive to minimise perineal trauma incidents.

The job involves implementing evidence based practices in antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care to prevent and address pelvic floor dysfunction arising from pregnancy and childbirth. The role entails improving the identification of pelvic floor issues both antenatally and postnatally, which will require conisistent and accessible information for service users and key health professionals, using assessment tools to support reliable evaluation.  Responsibilities include enhancing antenatal education, incorporating self assessment of pelvic health and promoting pelvic floor muscle training during antenatal contacts.

Access to NICE recommended treatments for common pelvic health issues will be supported through the establishment of a Perinatal Pelvic Health Service which will be within the remit of the successful candidate. This will provide a single point of access and streamline referral processes.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with physiotherapists, obstetricians, midwives, urogynae, colorectal colleagues and service users to develop and deliver a Perinatal Pelvic Health service that aligns with the NHSE Perinatal Pelvic Health Service Specification.

The specialist midwife will be responsible for working with the Trust governance processes to develop, embed and evaluate this service through submission of KPIs and audits.

The successful candidate will provide enhanced support for those at higher risk, developing personalised care plans and adopting shared practices to reduce obstetric injury risks during childbirth and ensuring quality wound care.
