Exciting opportunity has arisen for  Occupational Therapy Technical Instructor (OTTI)  to facilitate pottery sessions jointly with Occupational Therapy assessments and interventions. 

The PPH Therapy team is composed of Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Dietetics and Speech and Language Therapy team members. Working in a passionate Allied Health Professional team, you will have access to our Trust-wide Learning and Development programme and be supported in your career and personal growth with opportunities to help you to build your Continuing Professional Development portfolio, enabling you to extend your skills and ensure that you excel. As an Occupational Therapy Technical Instructor, you will have the opportunity to be trained in VDT MoCA (Model of Creative Ability). 

You will have a passion for caring a warm personality and the resilience to play a vital role in helping patients take the next step in their journey. With excellent communication and people skills, you will be empathetic and sensitive to the needs of patients, their families, and carers. You will engage and motivate patients therapeutically, using verbal and non-verbal skills where there are barriers to communication and understanding. Collaborating with our multidisciplinary team, you will be eager to learn.

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

  • Provide safe and stimulating activity in the multi-craft room for in-patients.

  • Educate staff about the value of craft/pottery as a Therapeutic activity. 

  • Be responsible for the appropriate risk management of all the tools and equipment used within the multi-craft room. 

  • The post holder will be responsible, under the guidance of a qualified Occupational Therapist, for delivering Occupational Therapy interventions, including the delivery of Therapeutic groups, to patients with range of mental health conditions.   

  • Provide quality, care and support which enables patients to be supported with a recovery focus throughout their in-patient care episode, whilst promoting independence and protecting choice, dignity, privacy, and safety. 

  • Engage service users and their carers in Therapeutic programmes of care and encourage them, in a compassionate manner, to support them in achieving their identified goals and to promote independence and well-being through a client-centred approach. 

  • Develop Therapeutic relationships with patients, using motivational interviewing techniques and empathy, using sensitivity and effective reassurance to establish an effective Therapeutic relationship with patients that may present barriers to engagement in Occupational Therapy. 

  • Show commitment to and participate in quality improvement activities and Clinical audits. 

  • Promote at all times a positive image of people with mental health conditions.

Education/Qualifications/Training

  • Good general educational qualifications including English & Maths at GCSE or equivalent grade C or above or equivalent.

  • Relevant Technical Qualification e.g. NVQ 3 relating to pottery/woodwork/technical craft based skills
  • Relevant clinical/healthcare qualification e.g. Care certificate, QFC/NVQ 2 and above

Continuous Professional Development

  • Willingness to take part in further training and self-directed learning

Previous Experience

  • Relevant experience in inpatient mental health setting as an OTA together with relevant short courses.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Have an awareness of mental health problems that patients can experience.
  • Ability to work independently with groups and individuals within a supportive environment.
  • Good communicator, both verbally and written with good IT skills
  • Ability to work as a team within the Therapy team and wider MDT.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to work on Weekends, Bank Holidays and Extended Hours, including shift working depending on the service needs. Possible Weekend duty frequency: 1 weekend day every 3rd weekend
