Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Cardiologist with specialist interests in Heart Failure, ICC and/or Cardiac Imaging at Milton Keynes University Hospital (MKUH) NHS Foundation Trust, with scheduled sessions at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – John Radcliffe Hospital.

This is replacement post in Cardiology with a special interest in Heart Failure. The post holder will support both inpatient and outpatient work and will work with the existing consultants to provide a 7-day general cardiology service for our local adult population. There is the opportunity to work sessions at OUH. Additional programmed activities may be available, but these are subject to annual discussion and agreement and do not form part of the underlying contractual agreement.

The Department of Cardiology provides a secondary care service to a population of about 320,000 in and around Milton Keynes which is increasing. The department has both established and developing links with a number of hospitals including Bedford, Luton and Oxford.

The hospital is undergoing continued investment with a recently opened same day emergency care (SDEC) unit, soon to open radiotherapy unit and planned further development with which works are ongoing.

Milton Keynes is the fastest growing and most successful city in the country for which we provide Emergency Medicine (including Paediatrics) from minor injury to major trauma, Critical Care, Cancer Services, General Surgery & Medicine, Women’s & Children Services (including Maternity, Paediatrics & Neonatal) and Renal Services.

The appointee will continue the development of our Cardiology services in Milton Keynes, working with partners in order to ensure excellent care across cardiology sub-specialties. The successful candidate will contribute to ICC sessions on behalf of Oxford University Hospital and will support with the heart failure service and virtual ward.  The post holder will provide General Cardiology services with colleagues, to fulfil our commitment to 7-day services and cardiology in-reach.

The successful candidate will be required to contribute to the teaching, supervision and assessment of medical students and will devote time to this activity on a regular basis. 

The post-holder will be required to participate in formal programmes of teaching for clinical medical students. 

The post-holder will help organise and participate in teaching, training and supervision duties for postgraduate medical trainees and other professional staff groups including nursing, physiologists and technical staff.

The post-holder will ensure compliance with our clinical governance framework, and will motivate colleagues, champion service user safety and dignity and drive continuous improvement.

§  The post holder will contribute to all aspects of the Cardiology service at MKUH, including provision of acute and elective care of adult Cardiology patients in conjunction with community services and regional specialist centres. Cardiology Consultants also support the Cardiology in-reach services, triage daily e-referrals from Primary Care and provide advice and guidance for GPs.

§  The successful candidate will participate in the Heart Failure multidisciplinary team, including close collaboration with the Community Heart Failure Nursing team.  This includes support for the Trust Heart Failure nurses to deliver excellent care for in-patients with Heart Failure across the Trust. The post-holder will be expected to develop and implement quality improvement based upon the National Heart Failure Audit and Business Intelligence. The post-holder will also deliver Heart failure out-patient clinics and ward rounds.

§  The post holder will contribute to the development of the virtual cardiology ward and care of patients using this nurse-led service.

§  There is a need for further consolidation of the close links between the Trust and regional ICC centre at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, and the post-holder is expected to participate fully in the OUH ICC service through participation in MDTs and provision of specialist clinics at one or both sites.

§  There will be opportunity for the post-holder to participate in imaging lists according to the relevant imaging accreditation held.
