Department- Blood Transfusion

Band: 7 £43,742-£50,056 per annum pro rata 

Hours: 30 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

We currently have an opportunity for a Specialist Transfusion Practitioner (TP) at Band 7 and invite applicants from suitably qualified and experienced Biomedical Scientists/Nurses Band 7 level or Band 6 either already fulfilling a TP role or experienced in Transfusion practices.

The post will involve training and education of clinical staff in the best transfusion practice of Blood and Blood Products and being the link between the Blood Transfusion department and service users. 

You will be part of a dedicated team of healthcare professionals who deliver a high-quality service that is responsive to patient requirements. Detailed knowledge and practice of the requirements for compliance with the BSQR/SABRE and SHOT reporting is a key requirement for this role. The successful candidate will be involved in investigating incidences, managing traceability, developing and training clinical transfusion related policies and representing the trust in relevant national and regional meetings.

The successful candidate must be HCPC registered as a Biomedical Scientist or have 1st Level Registration with the NMC.

To improve patient safety in respect of blood transfusion activity throughout the organisation by developing and delivering core training in all aspects of Blood Transfusion across the Trust.  To lead investigations into Transfusion related incidents that occur outside of the laboratory, ensuring compliance with Blood Safety and Quality Regulations 2005 and good practice guidance. 

The post holder will monitor the appropriateness of blood and blood component usage in association with the Blood Transfusion Laboratory via the use of audit methods and will investigate and develop ways of reducing blood and blood component use in a safe and cost-effective manner while maintaining effective patient blood management.

The post holder will work with Blood Transfusion manager to ensure Trust and departmental compliance with traceability, as required by BSQR 2005.

The post holder will participate in and facilitate meetings related to blood transfusion and work to monitor and improve standards of care via audit, evidence-based practice and research.

The post holder will be a key member of the Hospital Transfusion Committee (HTC) and Hospital Transfusion Team (HTT) working closely with the Consultant Haematologists, the Transfusion Laboratory and other members of the HTT and the HTC.

The post holder will have a major remit for training and competency assessment including planning, facilitating, and monitoring compliance across clinical staff groups.

To provide structure and organisation of Research and Development activity within the Pathology CSU. 

The post holder will participate in and facilitate meetings related to R&D and work to monitor and improve standards of care via audit, evidence-based practice and research. 

The post holder will provide accurate and up to date information to the Pathology Management Team regarding R&D activities.

Communication and relationship skills 

  • To ensure that communication is maintained between the laboratory and the hospital network of wards and departments.
  • Lead on improvements in organisational effectiveness in relation to blood transfusion by facilitating communication and problem solving between the relevant staff groups.

Analytical skills 

  • Plan better blood transfusion strategy implementation, education in wastage and alternatives to blood.
  • Produce relevant reports, which are reported to senior hospital management, and make recommendations to improve transfusion services and the use of blood, being able to present them as required.

Planning and organisation skills

  • Lead on the planning, organisation and development of training packages for all medical, nursing and healthcare workers involved with transfusion practices, to facilitate changes in practice and promote safe, effective and appropriate use of blood, blood components and blood products and to ensure National guidelines are implemented and promote NBTC competencies for transfusion.
  • To develop, plan, organise and deliver blood transfusion related, clinical training, and education programmes in line with Trust training and development department, to be delivered as part of in person clinical simulation training and ESR training platform.

Responsibility – patient/client care

  • Be a proactive member of both the Hospital Transfusion Committee and Hospital Transfusion Team maintaining national links with relevant professional bodies e.g. BBTS, NHSBT, SHOT and where appropriate, represent the Trust on transfusion related matters on these bodies and on the Regional Transfusion Committee.
  • To act as a specialist resource supporting staff in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care throughout the blood transfusion process.

Responsibility for policy and service development

  • To demonstrate expert knowledge, skills and innovative practice within the Blood transfusion specialist area, to develop the service.
  • To promote and develop the use of evidence-based practice to improve the outcomes of blood transfusions in patient care and encourage clinical staff of all grades to change outdated practices.
