An opportunity has arisen for an experienced and enthusiastic children’s nurse to work within the Children and Young Peoples Diabetes nursing team at the Great North Children’s hospital. The post is for a Band 6, 1.0 WTE (37.5 hours) and will run until 02.11.2025 to cover maternity leave.
This role would be suited to a Children’s nurse with a keen interest and some knowledge and experience in working with Children and young people with Diabetes.
The post holder will join a highly motivated team of specialist nurses, supporting and managing the care of children with all types of Diabetes, within the hospital, their own home and in their educational setting. Excellent communication skills and collaborative working across professional boundaries will be essential. We are looking to recruit a self-motivated Children’s nurse who is able to adapt their skills to an ever-changing role, in different environments and at times working unsupervised.
The applicant should have evidence of professional development to diploma level or equivalent. All applicants must have a flexible and enthusiastic approach.
As the post involves community travel, a current driving licence is essential.

- You will work within the MDT to support CYP with Diabetes and their carers with all aspects of diabetes management
- You will deliver education and support within the hospital and a range of community settings
- You will support the Children and Young People’s Diabetes team to provide an education program for health/education professionals
- You will contribute to the planning, delivery and evaluation of ongoing care pathways for CYP and their families with Diabetes
- You will be required to write reports for safeguarding processes and educational health care plans
- You will support and assist in service improvement and development

The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust define a nurse specialist as a qualified nurse where the primary purpose of role is to provide guidance and support based on advanced level knowledge to patients, carers and health professionals concerning a specific disease/condition.
Within the sphere of specialist practice:
- Is working towards advanced knowledge and skills within specialist sphere of practice.
- Contributes to the facilitation of the planning, delivery and evaluation of care pathways for a designated group of patients.
- Support the development of nursing practice within the specialist field and contribute to the body of nursing knowledge.
- Contributes to training and education within specialist area.
