Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the busiest, largest and most successful teaching NHS foundation trusts in the country, with around 16,000 staff and an annual income of £1 billion.

We have a long history of providing high quality care, clinical excellence, and innovation in medical research regionally, nationally and internationally.

We’re also proud to be the second largest provider of specialised services in the country. This means we support people with a range of rare and complex medical, surgical and neurological conditions, cancers and genetic orders.

Our staff oversee around 1.84 million patients ‘contacts’ each year, delivering high standards of healthcare.

We are committed to promoting equality and diversity and recognise the benefit in providing an inclusive environment. We value and respect the diversity of our employees and aim to recruit a workforce which reflects the communities we serve, and is equipped to deliver the best service to our patients. We welcome all applications irrespective of people’s race, disability, gender, sexual orientation, religion or belief, age, gender identity, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity and in particular those from under- represented groups.

Newcastle Hospitals are proud to be one of the exemplar organisations across the NHS on sustainability, with a long history of delivering Sustainable Healthcare in Newcastle (Shine) and the first healthcare organisation in the world to declare a climate emergency. Our strategy includes commitments to being Net Zero by 2030, for our direct carbon footprint, and Net Zero by 2040 for our footprint plus. Delivering these ambitions will not be possible without the help, support and action of every single member of our team.

We are excited to offer an opportunity for current NMC Registered Nurses (Adult) to apply to train as midwives. This 2-year, full-time Masters programme is provided jointly with Sheffield Hallam University and the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

On this course you’ll gain the underpinning knowledge and skills to develop your expertise in the field of midwifery, leading professional registration as a midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Midwifery is a highly rewarding and challenging career. The aim of this course is to prepare safe, competent and confident midwives who can positively contribute to the health of childbearing women, people, newborn infants and their families.

The full-time programme will have a 50% practice placement element (at NUTH) and 50% theory. 80% of the theory will be delivered online as distance learning. The remaining 20% theory will be delivered at Sheffield Hallam University, totalling 9 weeks of on-campus learning (for three days each week) across the 2 years.

This opportunity will be funded by NHS England who will fund salary (up to AfC mid-point Band 5), and tuition fees. The travel and accommodation expenses accrued with on-campus teaching will be funded by the Trust.

  • Interview Date Thursday, 10 October 2024
  • 37 Hours 30 Minutes/Week
  • You will be redirected to Trac to apply for the vacancy.  Please expand the job details section and read all of the information before applying for the vacancy

Students will be on a 2-year contract, paid salary up to midpoint Band 5, experience dependent, (no enhancements) for the duration of the course. The Programme will commence on 13th January 2025. At the end of the training contract, all students who have successfully completed the programme will automatically move into band 5 midwife posts. Upon qualification, the candidates will transition to the same salary point as during their training.

It is expected that staff will complete their midwifery qualification and register with the NMC as a midwife within 25 months of commencing the course. If there are delays to their qualification, and they do not register with the NMC as a midwife within 37 months, then a Band 5 midwife post would no longer be available for them, and they would be redeployed into a Band 5 Staff Nurse post within the Trust.

  • Contributes to the provision of high-quality midwifery care and the appropriate use and development of resources.
  • Working through a recognised Midwifery Preparation programme as directed by the NMC.
