Job overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for enthusiastic Paediatric EM Consultants from either Paediatric /Adult background to join our expanding team & support further the development of our well-established Children’s Emergency Department at UHS. The department provides a centre for Paediatric Emergency care and is the level 1 paediatric major trauma centre for the South Coast. It is the acute front door of Southampton Children’s Hospital and is supported by both general paediatric & sub-speciality teams.

The Children’s ED receives approximately 35,000 patients per year and receives both GP & self referrals from the local city of Southampton as well as being the paediatric major trauma centre with a 24/7 helipad and the tertiary care centre for many paediatric subspecialties. We currently have 8 WTE PEM Consultants from both a paediatric & adult background and work closely with our General Paediatric & General ED colleagues who provide shifts within the department.
In Sept 2019 we opened our new Children’s ED which provides 11 acute assessment beds, 8 short stay beds & paediatric X-ray. We have a dedicated paediatric Resus bay co-located within the main ED and a separate procedural sedation room. The department provides PEM grid training to both ED & Paediatric trainees and also delivers training to GP & Paediatric trainees. We have a nurse practitioner training programme, liaison CAMHS and youth workers and we participate actively in education & research.

UHS is rated ‘Good’ by the CQC and in the latest national NHS Staff Survey, we were in the top 10 acute trusts for staff engagement and for staff recommending the hospital as a place to work or receive care.

All non-clinical roles may involve a mixture of on site and remote working, Specific details and flexible working options can be discussed as part of the interview process. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London.
