We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team. 

This is a 10PA replacement post in our Connective Tissue Disease Service. The appointee will join our team with a view to contributing to our local and regional CTD and vasculitis MDT, supporting our specialised commissioned services and regional advice provision. The successful applicant will have a demonstrable interest in CTD and vasculitis and have sufficient experience to support our MDT. We are keen to support applicants who now or in the future wish to develop an interest in medical education. You may have a formal qualification in teaching or have significant evidence of experience/interest in this area with a view to undertaking such a qualification in future.

Main duties of the job

•    The successful candidate will share responsibility for running and ensuring best practice in our connective tissue disease and vasculitis service.
•    This will include supervision and training of junior doctors, clinical nurse specialists, clinical pharmacists, and AHP
•    Active contribution to the local and regional CTD MDT
•    Provision of long term care to an existing cohort of patients with connective tissue disorders and associated co-morbidities.
•    Contribute medical support to the team overseeing our infusion unit and ensure training and safety standards are met. Set up regular audit and quality improvement cycles. 
•    Once established in the clinical role to look to develop the departments engagement and participation with teaching across the medical undergraduate and graduate curriculum and support supervision and clinical oversight of AHP and nursing departmental teaching.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical:
•    Referrals come from Primary Care in Newcastle and surrounding areas, other medical specialities, and orthopaedics. 
•    Tertiary referrals come from a wide geographic area from West Cumbria to Teesside and North to the Scottish Border.
•    The successful candidate will share responsibility for running and ensuring best practice in our connective tissue disease service
•    The post-holder will participate in a consultant non-resident on call rota for rheumatology and will conduct a ward round with the on-call registrar on Saturdays and Sundays when on call. 

Administrative:
•    Participate in audit and clinical governance
•    Show a commitment to continuing professional development 
•    Participate in annual appraisal for revalidation and annual job planning meetings – guidance for which can be obtained from the Trust, GMC and Professional Bodies.

Research:
•    The successful candidate would be expected to participate in clinical research in line with the department and Trust priorities
•    Commitment to research participation
•    Awareness of GCP and commitment to maintain GCP certification

Teaching:
•    Enthusiastic about teaching 
•    Capacity and commitment to teaching medical undergraduate and graduate students, nursing and AHP team members
•    Option to develop formal teaching role and qualifications if not currently held. Interest in medical education would be considered an asset though not essential 

Person specification

Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills

Essential criteria
  • Primary Medical Qualification
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register (within 6 months from the date of the AAC)
Desirable criteria
  • Special skills training in the specialty
  • Evidence of participation in clinical trials at sub PI and PI level
  • Higher Degree
  • GCP certification

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of experience in the specialty
  • Evidence of a substantial commitment to the specialty
  • Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion within the speciality
  • Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to a tertiary centre
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of interest and clinical expertise in CTD and vasculitis subspeciality area of rheumatology
  • Awareness of national commissioning policies and prescribing practice in these specialist areas

Management and Administration Experience

Essential criteria
  • Involvement with management and project leadership within the specialty
  • Evidence of involvement in authoring or reviewing clinical guidelines
  • An understanding of Clinical Governance
Desirable criteria
  • Proven management and administrative experience and understanding of management goals
  • Evidence of leadership / project management
  • Evidence of having implemented change
  • Experience in developing and implementing new technologies

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Experience of supervising junior medical staff
  • Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Ability to teach clinical / technical / practical skills. Evidence of involvement in and understanding of research methodology and publication of findings
  • Research/critical review of literature
  • Publications in the last five years
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate qualification in medical education
  • Evidence of teaching training AHP/Nursing staff
  • Higher degree
  • GCP certification

Research
