An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Operational coordinator to join our team. We have three planning CT scanners, an exceptional Brachytherapy service which provides HDR, LDR and Papillon kV contact treatment; as well as an Xstrahl superficial machine.
Our Brachytherapy service currently sees about 130 cervix and endometrium patients and 25 HDR prostate patients a year. We also treat oesophagus, rectal cancer and are in the process of introducing skin and biliary HDR within the next financial year. We are also one of the five centres in the UK that has a Papillon machine to treat early rectal cancer.
Our main site and brachytherapy service is based at the Royal Surrey Hospital, Guildford and our satellite centre is based at East Surrey Hospital in Redhill. Guildford gives easy access to the beautiful North & South Downs Way, is an hour from the coast and has great transport links to the surrounding counties of Berkshire, Hampshire and Sussex. The city offers cultural diversity, is home to the University of Surrey and it is great place to reside and explore.
Main duties of the job
As an operational coordinator working as part of the Brachytherapy team, you will be under the supervision of the Operational Managers.
You will be responsible for assisting in the operational coordination of all staff within the radiotherapy department to ensure a safe service delivery. It is expected the post holder will work collaboratively with the other coordinators in order to provide satisfactory staffing with correct skill mix across the whole of the service keeping communication open to line management so all managers are up to date with current situations. You will regularly participate in all aspects of radiotherapy activities and your role will focus on operational coordination.
The post holder will provide information, education, practical and emotional support to patients and their carers during their radiotherapy, and will support staff health and wellbeing.
The St Luke’s Radiotherapy Department is based at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford and operates a satellite service from the East Surrey Hospital in Redhill.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The purpose of this role is to undertake radiotherapy interventions at a team leader level to the highest professional and technical standards, working with Medical, Radiographic, Physics and Administrative colleagues, within the Radiotherapy team and the wider Trust theatre team.
The Royal Surrey Cancer Centre is focused on providing excellent patient pathways and patient-centred care. We strive to continuously evolve to reflect the technical advances within Radiotherapy. To that end, we have recently completed the replacement of two of our Varian TrueBeams with a Varian ETHOS and a Varian Halcyon at our satellite centre. These units are the first in the NHS for in-bore SGRT and we are scheduled to be the first Centre to implement Hypersight later this year. Surface guided radiotherapy system installation will further improve the accuracy of treatment and present the opportunity for tattoo-less radiotherapy.
Our patients benefit from access to two ETHOS units, one Halcyon and four TrueBeams across our two radiotherapy centres.
Key to this role will be running the day to day running of the Brachytherapy service. This includes:
- operational coordination of all staff to ensure a safe service delivery.
- working collaboratively with the other coordinators in order to provide satisfactory staffing with correct skill mix across the whole of the service keeping communication open to line management so all managers are up to date with current situations.
- Responsibility for the timely review of Brachytherapy procedures and policy documents and be investigating manager for Brachytherapy incidents reporting to Operational Managers and Clinical Governance team.

Essential criteria
- MSc / BSc Radiotherapy/ Therapeutic Radiography or DCR (T)
- HCPC Registration
- Evidence of continuous personal, professional and academic development
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience as a Band 7 Therapeutic Radiographer
- Experience of working in a radiotherapy department on a wide range of radiotherapy equipment and specialised techniques
- Experience of collaborating with other staff groups outside Radiotherapy
- Use of computerised department record and verify systems
Desirable criteria
- Participation in clinical governance activities
- Project management related to service improvement
