Job overview

You will be responsible for immediate leadership of the safeguarding team and service across Colchester Hospital and community services.

 This will involve ensuring that the team maintains oversight of safeguarding practice across all patient groups, staff education and awareness of safeguarding concerns within the Trust. You will support and empower the safeguarding team to deliver a service which ensures high quality safeguarding responses.

Reporting directly to the Senior Lead for Safeguarding and Complex Health to ensure that practice within Colchester hospital and community services informs the overall understanding of ESNEFT wide needs in relation to safeguarding. You will work alongside their counterpart, the Head of Safeguarding families in Ipswich to ensure consistency across the whole service.

You will provide direct supervision to the named professionals within the team and will be responsible for building and maintaining professional relationships with leaders in ESNEFT and within partner organisations. You will support the Safeguarding Team to work in a way which empowers staff across services to undertake their roles and responsibilities in relation to Safeguarding.

 These include identification of concerns, communication regarding concerns, completion of referrals, undertaking of capacity assessments and application of proportionate restrictions in line with the MCA. 

Main duties of the job

  • Provide leadership for staff working within Colchester Hospital and Community Safeguarding services including line management, appraisals and performance management
  • Work closely with the Senior Lead for Safeguarding and Complex Health to identify service improvements and strategic actions to maintain good safeguarding practice and response across the Trust.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills which supports open and constructive discussions across divisions in the interest of meeting safeguarding requirements.
  • To build and maintain strong professional relationships with external safeguarding leads so as to ensure ESNEFT contributes to and participates in system wide developments and learning.
  • Ensure policies and protocols are reflective of legal frameworks and regulation requirements.
  • Support divisions to undertake investigations as required in line with safeguarding protocols.
  • Monitor and report on safeguarding performance quarterly and through the Trust annual safeguarding report.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of academic pathway equivalent to Degree in Nursing or Health Related study
  • Masters Degree in relation to health management Or equivalent
  • Professional nursing qualification
  • Demonstration and evidence of personal professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Masters Degree or working toward/unit/departments Masters Degree level education
  • Management Leadership Qualification, which has been tested in a management post

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Proven experience at senior nurse level and proven experience as Band 7 or above with highly developed and detailed knowledge and experience of the following:
  • Current health policy and its impact on the management and development of acute health services
  • Experience of effective budgetary management
  • Significant experience of effective staff management
  • Providing advice to specialist and non-specialist staff
  • Experience of ability to manage change quickly & effectively
  • Experience of ability to manage and lead nursing team
  • Experience of service redesign and development
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of effective working relationships both inside and outside the organisation
  • Leadership Facilitator
  • Experience of leading strategic/cross Trust changes
  • Experience in preparing business cases

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Heightened awareness of national nursing and midwifery initiatives
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to liaise & negotiate
  • Proven ability to lead teams effectively, exercising sound judgement
  • Ability to think & plan strategically, tactically & creatively and prioritise work programmes in the face of competing demands
  • Strong quality focus with an innovative approach & the ability to solve complex problems
  • Ability to critically appraise peer journals and apply research outcomes to clinical areas
  • Knowledge of strategies for effective change
